During its nine-season span, the American adaptation of The Office featured a host of unforgettable guest stars. Actors such as James Spader (Robert California) and Will Ferrell (Deangelo) had extended roles as eccentric managers in Scranton. Timothy Olyphant‘s Danny Cordray, a rival salesman, made a brief but impactful appearance on the mockumentary set in the workplace. Looking back, Olyphant cherishes his time on the show, but he also carries some lingering regrets.
In their latest podcast episode titled “The Office Ladies Podcast“, Angela Kinsey (Angela Martin) and Jenna Fischer (Pam Beesly) welcomed Timothy Olyphant for a discussion on his brief stint in “The Office“. Besides playing a rival salesman hired by Michael, Olyphant was also once involved romantically with Pam, adding a temporary complication to the beloved story of Pam and Jim. During their chat, Olyphant expressed that he found the mockumentary style of the show manageable, although he admitted one scene in particular where he felt he made a mistake.
It’s clear now that I botched an excellent moment with Steve Carell, as my laughter took over due to the scene being both intense and hilarious. A trace of regret remains because I couldn’t maintain a serious demeanor.
It’s understandable that it would be challenging for an actor from Deadwood to maintain a serious demeanor when working alongside the Despicable Me star, given the situation. In the scene we’re discussing, Danny discovers that his colleagues at Dunder Mifflin have orchestrated a trap to uncover Cordray’s methods. The outcome of this plan, which was rather disastrous, can be considered one of the Office characters’ less intelligent decisions. Michael’s subsequent pursuit of Danny as he exits in anger results in a humorous scene where Michael actually blocks the man from leaving the building.
In the final edit, Timothy Olyphant maintained his composure despite appearing unable to keep from laughing when looking at Steve Carell. This humorous moment was captured and shared on Instagram by a fan account.

Working alongside Steve Carell, who is famously known for his role as Michael Scott in The Office, presents a challenging task due to the fact that he has mastered the character so thoroughly over seven seasons. Given his exceptional acting skills, it’s not surprising that other guest stars have praised him for his performance on the show, such as Rashida Jones. Therefore, I wouldn’t worry too much about living up to Steve Carell’s standard, given that he could likely play the morally questionable manager in his sleep. This remarkable series can be streamed with a Peacock subscription.
To put it simply and clearly, despite the fact that the amusing scene was abruptly ended due to Timothy Olyphant’s laughter, “The Sting” remains one of the top episodes due to how disastrously the gang’s prank on Cordray unfolded. After all, what else would you anticipate when Meredith is in charge?
Despite some lingering feelings of dissatisfaction, it appears that the actor from Daisy Jones & The Six enjoyed his stint guest-starring on the legendary office sitcom. To my mind, Danny Cordray would be a fantastic choice for a recurring character in the upcoming Office spinoff. Furthermore, based on his recent podcast comments, I believe he’d be open to reprising his role as the traveling salesman.
