As a gamer with years of comic book-based video games under my belt, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming live-action adaptation of “Superman.” The trailer has been dropping some major surprises, and one that stood out was Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner – a character whose brash attitude and questionable decisions have always intrigued me.
Intriguing observers might have spotted a very well-known figure discharging an energy blast from a gleaming ring in the latest trailer for “Superman.” Surprisingly, that’s actor Nathan Fillion — known for “The Rookie,” “Castle,” and many other shows — portraying Guy Gardner. However, you might be wondering why he looks so different in the preview as compared to his red-carpet appearances. The reason is that he’s not just flaunting Gardner’s distinctive carrot-hued bowl cut (which isn’t too far from this amusing fan art of Fillion as Gardner), but he also seems to be wearing some makeup to better mimic Gardner’s chiseled good looks.
Guy, of course, is a member of DC Comics’ Green Lantern Corps, and one of its most brash members. A soldier who has a bit of a “my way or the highway” attitude, Guy cares about Earth in spite of his flaws and wants to make sure the people living there survive and thrive. But he can also be prickly, arrogant and a bit smug. And those are just the sorts of personality quirks that Fillion was looking forward to exploiting when he embarked upon playing Guy in “Superman.”
Nathan Fillion is excited to explore Guy Gardner’s flaws
Despite initially appearing in DC Comics in 1968, Guy Gardner embodies the spirit of the 1980s; during the height of the Cold War, he attempted a solo invasion of the Soviet Union. Furthermore, he’s the type of character who once dared to engage Batman in a fistfight (and was defeated with a single punch). It’s these endearing yet somewhat imprudent superhero actions that fans can anticipate encountering when they meet this live-action version of Guy for the first time.
One reason Nathan Fillion was drawn to playing Guy Gardner, the notorious rogue among the Green Lanterns, is that he relishes portraying characters with flaws. In his own words, “Guy Gardner is 90% flawed and doesn’t care. That’s one of his flaws.” Fillion sees a certain liberation in playing such complex roles, stating, “I think there’s a real freedom in playing that.” For an actor who enjoys delving into the nuances of imperfect characters, Guy Gardner presents a treasure trove of opportunities. Movie-goers can look forward to witnessing Fillion’s spirited portrayal of Guy’s larger-than-life antics when the film premieres in theaters on July 11, 2025, and will be eager to see if Fillion’s interpretation of this loveably detestable character suits James Gunn’s vision for a “Superman” movie.
