As a diehard film enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the resilience of the iconic series, S.W.A.T. Time and again, it manages to rise from the ashes, defying expectations. Just when I thought the final chapter had been written in the 2025 TV schedule, Sony pulled a surprise with the announcement of a spinoff titled S.W.A.T. Exiles. The charismatic Shemar Moore is set to reprise his role as Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson in this new venture.
Admittedly, the prospect of only 10 episodes seems somewhat meager compared to the average 20-22 episode seasons that S.W.A.T. has been known for. However, a Sony executive offers a compelling explanation for this decision.
Moore has been quite vocal about his desire to keep the S.W.A.T. series alive following each cancellation, and he’s continued to remain optimistic that more could be in the works. Lately, he posted an unreserved message on Instagram about the new spinoff, expressing as much enthusiasm as ever to carry on, even though the show still doesn’t have a network and has only been commissioned for 10 episodes. Sony Pictures TV President Katherine Pope told Variety that 10 episodes was actually ideal for storytelling.
It seems that 10 episodes appears to be the right number for us to effectively convey our story. We examined options of 8, 10, and 13 episodes, and ultimately chose 10.
Given that CBS appears to have concluded its run with S.W.A.T., it’s quite likely that the spin-off series, S.W.A.T. Exiles, could find a new home on a streaming platform. This could lead to extended episodes and greater creative liberty in storytelling. Typically, ten episodes is the usual order for shows on streaming platforms today, and it seems like an adequate number. Moreover, Sony undoubtedly wants to continue S.W.A.T., and they seem to have carefully considered what would be an appropriate episode count. Therefore, I’m confident in their decision.
Furthermore, it was earlier disclosed that many of the crew on S.W.A.T. would maintain their positions for Exiles. Pope commended the team and discussed how they are resilient, ready to adapt during the initial phase of S.W.A.T., and have consistently proven themselves capable of delivering under any circumstances.
This team we’ve got has been unrivaled and remarkably steady across eight seasons. Jim Scura, our line producer for S.W.A.T. Exiles, initially joined S.W.A.T. and climbed up the ranks. When you’re dealing with risk, it’s crucial to trust your team to deliver. What sets this S.W.A.T. team apart is their uncanny ability to always meet deadlines and stay within budget. Even when unexpected events occur, such as during a pandemic or wildfires, they adapt effortlessly.

Despite the widespread excitement surrounding S.W.A.T. Exiles, it seems there were issues happening behind the scenes. Some of the stars and writers found out about the spinoff only days before its announcement, while long-time production members were left in the dark. In contrast to the large crew of around 200 based in LA who worked on the original CBS procedural, only Shemar Moore will be reprising his role for the new series. This was a surprise, even though some other actors had hoped that their involvement wouldn’t end here.
No matter if episodes are long or short and who’s involved on or off-screen, it’s thrilling to learn that the series S.W.A.T., which was canceled three times, will continue, even in the form of a spinoff. With Hondo working with a fresh team, we can’t predict what lies ahead, but knowing that the show is returning in some capacity makes it more satisfying than nothing. For now, fans can enjoy S.W.A.T. by subscribing to Netflix or Paramount+.
