As a seasoned comedy veteran with a knack for dishing out the truth, I’ve seen my fair share of Hollywood drama, but none quite like the Ryan Reynolds-T.J. Miller saga. Now, I ain’t one to gossip, but let me tell ya, this feud between Deadpool and Weasel was the real deal.
Ryan Reynolds solidified his status as one of Tinseltown’s top leading men by starring in the blockbuster film Deadpool, where he portrayed the smart-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson with a standout, memorable performance. This Marvel Comics character adaptation made its grand premiere on the big screen in 2016 and left both critics and viewers spellbound, raking in more than $782 million at the box office. The film’s success not only won over fans but also kick-started a prosperous franchise that continues to delight audiences today.
Initially, the first two films starred Reynolds teaming up with comedian T.J. Miller, who played Weasel, Wade’s faithful but mischievous sidekick. The duo exchanged hilarious banter and displayed a fantastic chemistry on screen. However, in 2022, Miller made some harsh statements about working with Reynolds, stating he would not collaborate with him again. True to his word, Miller was missing from the recent blockbuster movie “Deadpool & Wolverine”. Let’s explore why Miller has decided against working with Ryan Reynolds in future projects.
Who Is T.J. Miller?
As a gamer putting on my retrospective glasses, let me share a tidbit about T.J. Miller – remember him? He first graced the silver screen in the groundbreaking 2008 monster movie extravaganza, Cloverfield. Playing the fearless cameraman Hud Platt, he documented the chaos and colossal monster rampaging through New York City, making us all jump in our seats.
In 2014, Thomas Middleditch started portraying Erlich Bachman, an entrepreneur character, on the popular HBO comedy series Silicon Valley. This show revolved around Richard Hendricks, a brilliant programmer, who founded a startup called Pied Piper. The storyline followed Richard and his team as they grappled with pressure while attempting to outdo their competition in the tech industry. The series was set in the heart of the tech world and ran for six seasons until 2019. Throughout its TV run, it drew widespread acclaim and admiration for its portrayal of Silicon Valley’s unique culture.
Miller received a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series due to his exceptional performance in a captivating series, yet he was later replaced on Silicon Valley before its fifth season, with creator Mike Judge stating it was because Miller failed to attend work and appeared unwell when present. Despite facing ongoing scandals, the comedian secured significant roles in movies such as Transformers: Age of Extinction, Big Hero 6, and Ready Player One, eventually landing a key role in the 2016 blockbuster sensation Deadpool.
What Character Did Miller Play in Deadpool?
In the sensational action-comedy Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds played the unforgettable role of Wade Wilson, a crude, self-effacing mutant mercenary. Meanwhile, T.J. Miller brought Weasel to life, Wilson’s loyal friend and fellow jokester. Kinberg, the producer, cast Miller for this part because he needed an actor capable of matching Reynolds’ humor, with Miller himself noting that he was selected due to his resemblance to a character whose superpower is accidentally spilling mustard on his shirt.
As a gamer, I can’t help but reminisce about my epic role as Weasel in the initial two Deadpool movies. The response was nothing short of phenomenal – both films shattered box office records, raking in over $780 million globally. They were adored for their off-the-chart profanity, captivating performances, and unparalleled entertainment value.
Controversy & Sexual Assault Allegations
Following his termination from Silicon Valley, Miller encountered a series of troubles and unfavorable media attention. In 2016, he was arrested for assaulting an Uber driver, and in 2018, he was caught making a false bomb threat on an Amtrak train. Both instances resulted in out-of-court settlements. However, Miller’s questionable decisions didn’t end there. During the peak of the Me Too movement, he was accused of aggressive behavior during a sexual encounter at George Washington University in 2001.
A nameless lady claimed Miller physically abused her during a private moment, involving acts of choking, shaking, and punching in the mouth. These accusations were supported by eyewitnesses, triggering university student conduct hearings. The outcome of these proceedings was kept confidential by the university. Miller rejected the sexual assault charge, but the incident significantly damaged his reputation. This was evident when DreamWorks Animation removed him from ‘How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World’ due to the unsettling claims. Unfortunately for Miller, the filming for ‘Deadpool 2’ had been finalized before the woman made her allegations against him. However, this wasn’t the only issue he encountered with the franchise.
Miller Alludes to On-Set Tension with Reynolds
It seems that Miller and his Deadpool co-star Reynolds don’t seem to have a warm relationship, as Miller made critical comments about the leading man during a 2022 interview on The Adam Carolla Show. In a straightforward manner, Miller shared his belief that Reynolds harbors dislike towards him and attempted to undermine him in front of their cast and crew. Although he praised Reynolds’ impressive portrayal of Deadpool, Miller went further to label him as an “insecure individual” off-screen and claimed he made attempts to humiliate him during filming scenes.
In this scenario, the character was incredibly rude to me, almost as if I were a sidekick or supporting character. He seemed to think I was like Weasel, serving my purpose in providing necessary information while not being the main focus of the story. His words were something like: “You know what’s great about you, Weasel? You’re not the star, but you do just enough exposition that it’s funny, and then we can leave and get back to the real movie.”
In further discussion, Miller indicated that their professional relationship extended beyond their on-screen personas, and he feels that Reynolds harbors genuine disdain for him personally. Following the explosive success of the initial Deadpool movie, the actor reportedly let fame get to his head. The comedian then revealed that interactions during filming provided insight into Reynolds’ character, leaving a bitter aftertaste. He openly expressed no interest in working with the star on future projects, sharing this sentiment with Carolla.
“Let me clarify: Despite our differences, I admire his talent in the role of Deadpool. It’s strange that he seems to dislike me, but I don’t wish him any harm. I believe Reynolds should carry on with Deadpool 3 and future projects. However, I find it odd how he has expressed his feelings towards me.”
Miller Changes His Tune
Following the public disclosure of Miller’s candid remarks about Reynolds, it was announced shortly after his conversation with Adam Carolla that they had resolved their issues. During a guest spot on SiriusXM’s Jim Norton & Sam Roberts, Miller shared that Reynolds promptly contacted him post-interview to mend fences. It appears that Miller’s stance on his accusations and sentiments towards Reynolds softened, with him attributing the media’s focus on negative headlines as the cause of their rift.
“I hadn’t realized my words might have come across as negative. I’m sorry if they did and if they were misinterpreted. Yes, there was a misunderstanding, but we cleared it up the next day through conversation. It was surprising when he mentioned hearing on the show that I was upset, but I assured him I wasn’t, and we quickly resolved the issue.”
Despite Miller and Reynolds reconciling, it’s regrettable that Miller was noticeably absent from his role as Weasel in the 2024 blockbuster “Deadpool & Wolverine 3”. This movie, which is breaking records and delighting audiences worldwide with its impressive cast, outrageous humor, and electrifying team-up of Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, appears to be without Miller. Given his absence since the 2020 romantic comedy “The Stand In” and the allegations against him, it seems highly improbable that Miller will rejoin the “Deadpool” franchise.
