Tim Allen’s upcoming show titled “Shifting Gears” has drawn attention following its inclusion in the 2025 TV lineup, thanks to a strong cast and a storyline described by the actor as more personal or relatable. Given my recent coverage of the program, I was eager to watch it and discovered that there’s an aspect of Allen’s new character within the show that aligns remarkably well with me.
One interesting fact to note about “Shifting Gears” if you haven’t watched it yet is that its long-time comedian, Matt, owns an auto body shop specializing in restoring and performing body work on classic cars. Tim Allen mentioned that some of his own vehicles were utilized in the show. What I find intriguing about this top-rated new comedy airing this television season is how seamlessly Matt’s personal taste in cars carries over to his home decor.
When I first watched Shifting Gears, I observed that the house had a straightforward design with limited spaces, primarily consisting of a kitchen overlooking the yard and a living room. Throughout these areas, it was evident that Matt cherishes all things vintage, as seen in his appliance selections and other aspects.

Scattered around the house, along with the workshop, are vintage or retro-style decor pieces. My favorite among them is the eye-catching blue Big Chill refrigerator in the kitchen. I discovered that the Parker family bought this vibrant appliance, and it’s a dream of mine to have one like it in my own home. However, if you aren’t hunting for a big blue fridge, there are other charming mini options available too.

I’m not sure who was responsible for the set design on the show (credits say it’s Jerie Kelter), but bravo to whoever made the choice to incorporate a retro aesthetic into Matt’s home. Elements like the colorful camper in the backyard are a great fit for the character, and they help make the space feel like Matt’s own rather than just a space designed by his late wife. While her influence is still noticeable in the sitcom’s early episodes, these details also avoid making it seem like the entire home was simply a design left behind by his wife.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve casually enjoyed Tim Allen’s work in the past, occasionally catching episodes of “Last Man Standing” when I was a nanny and the kids were asleep. However, the dynamic between Allen and Kat Dennings in this latest season has me hooked. Their chemistry is reminiscent of a classic sitcom duo, and I find myself drawn to the series more frequently now. They’re like a comedy dream team, and while the show may evoke nostalgia with its throwback feel, it’s a vibe that’s resonating strongly with me. I believe it’s the retro elements that make it so appealing.
If you haven’t give it a watch yet, you’re in luck. New episodes air on Wednesdays.
