Each year, folks tune into the Super Bowl not only for the main event but also for the commercials, and this year is no exception with actor Timothy Simons joining the fray. Known for his roles in “Veep” and “Nobody Wants This,” Simons stars in a Coors Light advertisement where he struggles to deliver his lines during filming (instead of saying “That’s not my problem,” Simons repeatedly blurts out, “That’s not my pasta”). The director keeps correcting him, but Simons persistently mixes up his words. Eventually, the director gives him a “case of the Mondays” – in this context, a case of Coors Light that simply reads “Mondays.” To add to the confusion, Simons is eventually replaced by another actor who gets the line correct.
Who is this fellow named Simon, and why does he seem so recognizable? Simon has been featured in a wide range of productions, from “The Interview” to “Station Eleven” to “Looking for Alaska,” and his comedic talent elevates every project; here are three of his most notable works, which you can enjoy following the viewing of his hysterical Super Bowl commercial.
Jonah Ryan in Veep (2012-2019)
In the series “Veep,” characterized by a cast of reprehensible characters, Timothy Simons’ portrayal of Jonah Ryan could arguably be the most detestable among them. Moreover, his character undergoes the most captivating transformation into a villain throughout the show, which is quite remarkable. Initially, Jonah is an inexperienced and somewhat irritating White House liaison who collaborates with Vice President Selina Meyer’s (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) team, but over time, even minimal political influence consistently warps Jonah into a truly horrific figure.
In the TV series “Veep,” Jonah embarks on a political journey, first attempting, unsuccessfully, to become a representative in New Hampshire’s House and then making an attempt at the presidency. Throughout his chaotic and bizarre missteps, his political associates consistently undermine his self-confidence, as evidenced by a collection of derogatory nicknames they gave him during a hearing about Meyer’s administration (please be aware that this content is NSFW, but you can view it here). By the conclusion of the series, Selina extends the VP position on her presidential ticket to Jonah, which elicits several outrageous reactions from her staff, shedding light on Jonah’s character. The series “Veep” is currently streaming on Max, though it might be challenging to watch in 2025 (for certain reasons).
Pat Montgomery in Candy (2022)
Two distinct television series have been released recently, delving into the tale of Candy Montgomery, a woman who was charged with murdering her friend Betty Gore with an axe in Wylie, Texas, back in 1980. One is “Love & Death,” which premiered on HBO in 2023, featuring Elizabeth Olsen as Candy and Patrick Fugit portraying her husband Pat. The other is “Candy,” an original production by Hulu, starring Jessica Biel as Candy and Timothy Simons playing the role of Pat.
In the drama series “Candy,” which is currently available on Hulu, Simon’s character, Pat, portrays a more complex and somber role than usual for him. He shares an impeccable chemistry with Biel, creating the image of a harmonious nuclear family with two children. Melanie Lynskey plays Betty, while Pablo Schreiber takes on the role of Betty’s husband, Alan. The storyline revolves around an affair between Alan and Candy, which ultimately leads to Betty’s murder. Over five episodes, Simon delivers a consistently outstanding performance as Candy’s devoted and bewildered husband, who was unaware of her infidelity, let alone the fact that she might be capable of murder.
Sasha in Nobody Wants This (2024-present)
Currently, Timothy Simons is starring in the Netflix original series “Nobody Wants This,” a romantic comedy that revolves around an unexpected bond between rabbi Noah Roklov (played by Adam Brody) and sex-positive podcaster Joanne (portrayed by Kristen Bell). After meeting at a mutual friend’s gathering, Noah and Joanne quickly become friends, but their contrasting backgrounds often put their relationship in jeopardy. For instance, Noah’s recent ex Rebecca (Emily Arlook) is still pursuing him, causing potential complications.
In the series “Succession”, Simons takes on the role of a character who is both intrigued and concerned by the unconventional relationship between Noah and Joanne. His character forms a unique friendship with Morgan, Joanne’s younger sister and podcast co-host, portrayed by breakout star Justine Lupe. The chemistry between Simons and Lupe is hilarious and spot on, making their banter a must-watch in the Netflix series “Nobody Likes This”. You might initially tune in for Noah and Joanne’s romance, but don’t forget to stick around for the entertaining interplay between Lupe and Simons.
