As a mother who has raised three children of my own and spent countless hours watching cartoons with them, I can truly appreciate the impact that shows like Craig of the Creek have on young minds. This series was more than just entertainment; it was a safe space where my kids could see characters from diverse backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ representation, which is all too rare in children’s television.
As a devoted movie reviewer, I must share my disappointment with fellow enthusiasts: Craig of the Creek, the cherished animated series on Cartoon Network, is unfortunately bidding farewell after six thrilling years and six seasons. This captivating show, filled with enigmatic adventures, diverse characters, and heartwarming explorations of friendship, has resonated deeply with both children and adults alike. The final chapter of this beloved tale will debut in January 2025, bringing an end to the Creek’s magical journey.
Craig of the Creek is a show produced by Matt Burnett and Ben Levin, who also worked on Steven Universe. The main character is 10-year-old cartographer Craig Williams, voiced by Philip Solomon from Hero Mode. Along with friends Kelsey (Noël Wells) and J.P. (H. Michael Croner), Craig explores exciting adventures in a nearby creek located in the fictional suburb of Herkleton, Maryland which is just outside Balitmore-DC. Their adventures are limited only by their imagination, turning the simple creek into their playground, reflecting the essence of childhood creativity and enduring friendship.
The series swiftly gained a loyal audience due to its focus on diversity, representation of LGBTQ+ individuals, and overall inclusive narratives. Despite its success and recognition, “Craig of the Creek” will not continue for a seventh season. Here’s what we currently understand about why this show has been terminated.
No Official Statement from Cartoon Network
As a passionate cinephile, I haven’t heard Cartoon Network officially explain why they decided not to renew Craig of the Creek. The absence of any hints of controversy or poor ratings leads me to believe that the series might have just run its course after an impressive run, naturally concluding its story.
The reduction in animation projects could mainly be attributed to the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery in April 2022. Consequently, this union led to significant cost-cutting measures, one of which was reducing the episode order for the fifth season of the show, thereby truncating its final run and suggesting that it might soon conclude entirely.
By December, co-creator Ben Levin confirmed that the merger was to blame on X:
The extraordinary skills of everyone involved turned Creek into a vivid, dynamic environment. The characters and settings were deeply layered and captivating, making it feel like there was always more to discover. Sadly, due to this merge, we must bid farewell to further tales we had in store.
The production company regrettably couldn’t proceed with another season for Craig and his team at this time, as they were in a phase of transition. This decision, however, isn’t unique; it’s part of a broader trend within the animation industry where companies frequently have to cancel successful shows due to financial constraints, restructuring, and the desire to attract new audiences by refreshing their programming lineup.
A Disappointing Loss: ‘Craig of the Creek’s’ Inclusivity and LGBTQ+ Representation
After the initial release of “Craig of the Creek”, both viewers and critics swiftly acknowledged the series’ unique array of characters, many belonging to diverse sexual orientations and identities. The show includes two Witches of the Creek, Tabitha (portrayed by Karen Kilgariff) and Courtney (Georgia Hardstark), who are depicted as lesbians. Additionally, it features a non-binary character named Angel José, initially voiced by Angel Lorenzana, and numerous other LGBTQ+ characters sprinkled throughout its episodes.
By featuring characters that are typically underrepresented in children’s programming, showrunners created a welcoming environment on TV for audiences from diverse backgrounds, emphasizing individuality by making it commonplace. This approach led the series to garner two Daytime Emmy nominations, a GLAAD Media Award nomination, and admiration from fans who found themselves represented on screen. Consequently, the cancellation of this show is not simply the end of an enjoyable tale, but a profound loss for a production dedicated to progressive and vital representation.
What Can Fans Expect Next?
Despite the sixth and final season of “Craig of the Creek” having premiered in June, its remaining episodes won’t air in the U.S. until January 4, 2025, at 9 am EST. However, there’s more to look forward to for fans. An animated prequel movie titled “Craig Before the Creek” was released by Cartoon Network as early as 2023. This film takes us back in time, where Craig is the new kid in town, attempting to move back to his old home. In search of a fortune-teller to grant this wish, he ventures into the nearby creek – a journey that sets the stage for the original series.
In the very same year, a spin-off series titled Jessica’s Big Little World debuted on Cartoon Network’s preschool block, Cartoonito. This show focuses on Craig’s younger sister, Jessica (Lucia Cunningham), as she experiences life’s little challenges in her early years. Sadly, the show was terminated along with other cuts across WBD networks. Despite its cancellation, one season is available for fans of Craig of the Creek who crave more, filled with the same exhilarating adventures, diversity, and entertainment.
Craig of the Creek is available to stream on Max and Hulu.
