Why Wicked Part Two Will Feature 2 Brand-New Songs Created Exclusively For the Movie

As a seasoned gamer of musicals and fantasy tales alike, I eagerly await the arrival of “Wicked Part Two” next November. The prospect of new songs penned by the original composer, Stephen Schwartz, is tantalizing, especially knowing that they were organically incorporated into the movie’s narrative.

When “Wicked” resumes for its second part in November, it will introduce two fresh tunes that weren’t included in the initial Broadway musical. Rest assured, these new compositions share the same quality of the renowned stage production, having been penned by the original “Wicked” lyricist and composer, Stephen Schwartz, who also served as an executive producer for the double film adaptation.

Last year, he explained to The Messenger (through Playbill), these elements were organically incorporated into the movie as the narrative demanded them. He further stated: ‘There are fresh elements that I believe fans will appreciate. However, our aim is not to disappoint those who value the story and show, but rather to excite them with what they’ll see, the new additions, and the innovative use of film.’

Furthermore, Schwartz didn’t provide any clear insights into the themes or subjects of the tunes he mentioned.

What is the story of Wicked Part Two?

In the sequel, similar to Act II of its original, the story unfolds after Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo) is infamously known as the Wicked Witch of the West, terrorizing the lands of Oz. This is reminiscent of the classic tale, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, where it’s widely believed that Elphaba met her end at the hands of a young girl from Kansas named Dorothy.

According to director Jon M. Chu in an interview with GamesRadar, the first movie focuses on the significance of choices, particularly Elphaba’s crucial decision at the end, while Glinda is yet to fully commit to that choice. He further explains that the second movie will explore the repercussions of making those decisions, emphasizing that a satisfying conclusion doesn’t signify the end of the story. Instead, life continues, offering new challenges such as when the place you cherish and defend rejects your presence. This raises the question: if this place is no longer welcoming, does it still feel like home? The director hints that these themes of understanding ‘home’ and finding one’s ‘home’ will be explored more deeply in the next movie.
