With a phenomenal Hollywood career spanning five decades and countless blockbuster hits to his legendary name, cinema icon Steven Spielberg is hands down one of the entertainment industry’s most revered directors and is rightfully regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Known for endless fan-favorite classics like Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, and the Indiana Jones franchise, Spielberg is without a doubt one of the silver screen’s most innovative and commercially successful visionaries who continues to dazzle and delight audiences all around the world.
In 2018, Steven Spielberg directed an exceptional film called Ready Player One, a sci-fi steampunk action movie set in a future where society is near collapse and people escape their real-life struggles by immersing themselves in a captivating virtual reality simulation. The movie is filled with numerous references to pop culture of the past, providing viewers with an entertaining and thrilling experience that was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. It grossed over $607 million and received an Oscar nomination. Let’s delve deeper into this must-see film.
Spielberg’s Sci-Fi Cyberpunk Homage to Pop Culture
From the genius mind of revered directing legend Steven Spielberg comes the 2018 nostalgia-fueled sci-fi extravaganza Ready Player One, an epic thrill ride from start to finish that takes place in 2045 in a chaotic and crumbling world where the wondrous virtual reality entertainment universe OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation) allows people who use it to escape their harsh real life. When its quirky and brilliant co-creator James Halliday (Mark Rylance) passes away, the gifted innovator leaves behind a thrilling treasure hunt where the lucky winner will inherit his vast fortune and control of OASIS.
Teenage orphan Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) jumps at the chance to find the highly-coveted Golden Easter egg hidden within the spellbinding universe, playing as his avatar Parzival alongside his loyal friends known as The High Five and setting out to complete the three dangerous challenges to win the competition. Wade swiftly emerges as a fan-favorite hero as he delves deeper into the fantastical world around him, but must ultimately race against the clock to find the egg before the nefarious corporation IOI and its scheming CEO Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) capture it first.
Based on the acclaimed Ernest Cline novel of the same name, Warner Bros. had initially considered prominent directors like Robert Zemeckis, Christopher Nolan, and Peter Jackson to helm the silver-screen adaptation before cinema icon Spielberg signed onto the exciting project. The studio had previously collaborated with the famed filmmaker in the ’80s on lauded movies like The Color Purple and Empire of the Sun, and declaring him “the dream director for this project.”
‘Ready Player One’ Is a Dazzling Feast for the Eyes
Spielberg went to painstaking lengths to ensure that the immersive and breathtaking visual effects featured in Ready Player One left moviegoers enchanted from the very beginning, with the determined director enlisting the expertise of George Lucas’ digital studio Industrial Light & Magic to create the world of OASIS and its dazzling segments. A total of 900 visual effects shots were ultimately created for the picture, and Spielberg met up with ILM three times a week for 3-hour-long meetings during the production, with Spielberg expressing at the time, “this is the most difficult movie I’ve done since Saving Private Ryan.”
Ready Player One also contained countless real world pop culture references that ILM produced digital versions of (including many of Spielberg’s own beloved classics), such as King Kong, the Iron Giant, the Overlook hotel from The Shining, the DeLorean time machine from the Back to the Future franchise, and the T-Rex from his ’90s blockbuster hit Jurassic Park. Due to his illustrious career and respected reputation, Spielberg was able to secure the rights to about 80% of the copyrighted elements featured in the film, as it contains over 100 references to movies, TV shows, video games, music, and more.
The sci-fi cyberpunk spectacle made its triumphant premiere on March 29, 2018, captivating audiences all across the world with its electrifying visuals, rip-roaring storytelling, and Spielberg’s masterful direction, with Ready Player One serving as the decorated filmmaker’s love letter to pop culture and the entertainment industry. Both a critical and commercial success, the movie went on to gross over $607 million against a $175 million budget and received a solid 72% Rotten Tomatoes score and A− CinemaScore from fans.
Ready Player One was rightfully nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and was named the Best Science Fiction Film at the Saturn Awards, and due to the overwhelmingly positive response from audiences, a sequel is currently in development with Spielberg set to produce. Author Ernest Cline was also blown away by the big-screen reimagining and had previously thought an adaptation would be unfilmable due to the countless pop culture references. Cline praised Spielberg and his impact on the industry, telling Inverse in 2020:
“I don’t think any other filmmaker besides Spielberg could have gotten so many of the licenses we ended up using. That’s one of the reasons I thought it was unfilmable…But everyone said yes to him because everyone wants to have their IP featured in a Spielberg movie so it opened these doors. It was the best creative experience I’ve ever had.”
