As a die-hard fan of musicals and someone who has grown up with the tales of Oz, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation towards the release of Wicked. The fact that Universal Pictures is making adjustments to ensure the success of this highly anticipated film is truly commendable.
As audiences anxiously wait for the premiere of “Wicked” this coming November, Universal Pictures has slightly adjusted the release date for “Wicked Part Two”. Luckily, the shift isn’t significant. Unlike how it won’t be marketed as “Wicked Part One”, the movie titled “Wicked” explores the previously untold tale of the Wicked Witch of the West, now portrayed as a sorrowful character named Elphaba. The film will cover Act 1 from the Broadway play, focusing on the complex relationship between Elphaba (Cynthia Ervino) and her eventual friend Glinda (Ariana Grande). Universal has previously confirmed that “Wicked” would be split into two parts, with both parts slated for consecutive years.
The sequel to “Wicked”, titled “Wicked Part Two“, is now scheduled to hit theaters a week ahead of its original release date. As per Variety, Universal Pictures has moved up the film’s premiere to November 21, 2025. This shift from the initial release date of November 26, 2025, means that the movie will now be screened on a Tuesday instead of the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Initially, it was planned to premiere on the same day as “Zootopia 2“, but the new schedule allows both films to avoid direct competition at the box office during the Thanksgiving holiday. Instead, “Wicked Part Two ” will have a head start in the theaters.
Wicked Backs Down From Disney Sequels Twice
To prevent clashing with “Zootopia 2” at the box office, the release date for “Wicked Part Two” has been shifted. This is reminiscent of what happened this year with the original “Wicked,” which was initially scheduled for November 27, 2024, and was set to compete with “Moana 2” during the Thanksgiving weekend. However, after the impressive box office debut of “Inside Out 2,” Universal Pictures opted to rearrange their release calendar, moving “Wicked” to November 22, 2024. Although it will now face off against “Gladiator II,” the studio believes this is a more favorable match-up compared to competing against another Disney sequel of an adored animated film.
Currently, the strategy being employed for the release of “Wicked Part Two” mirrors that of film series such as “Harry Potter”, “The Hunger Games”, and “Twilight”. Historically, these franchises have capitalized on the Friday preceding Thanksgiving to boost box office success. Given this pattern, it is advantageous for both “Wicked” and its sequel to follow suit. As of now, apart from “Wicked Part Two” and “Zootopia 2”, the only scheduled films for November 2025 are Marvel Studios’ “Blade” on November 7 (which may be subject to change due to the reboot lacking a director), and Lionsgate’s “Now You See Me 3” on November 14. For the time being, “Wicked Part Two” appears poised to be one of the most significant films during the 2025 holiday season.
