As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel the thrill when I hear about Director Jon M. Chu’s movie version of the beloved Broadway show “Wicked” raking in a whopping ten nominations at this year’s Academy Awards, with one of those nods being for Best Picture! It’s like leveling up to the next stage in my favorite game, knowing that such a fantastic production is getting the recognition it deserves.
In the Wicked movie, stars Cynthia Erivo (as Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (as Glinda), received nominations for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role respectively. This marks Erivo’s third Oscar nomination, having also been recognized twice at the 92nd annual ceremony in 2020 for her role in Harriet. Additionally, Simon Hayes, whom NBC Insider interviewed towards the end of 2024, was honored for his exceptional sound work alongside Nancy Nugent Title, Jack Dolman, Andy Nelson and John Marquis.
Speaking about it, Hayes expressed that each film he has been a part of has provided him with small pieces of knowledge and experience that eventually allowed him to bring the movie Wicked to life. In essence, he considers this project as the culmination of his lifetime’s work. Previously, Hayes had won an Academy Award for his role in 2012’s film Les Misérables.
