‘Wicked,’ ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘The Substance’ Earn ReFrame Stamp for Gender-Balanced Hiring

Among the top 100 most popular movies of 2024, “Wicked, Emilia Peréz” and “The Substance” are among the 30 that were recognized with a ReFrame Stamp for having gender-balanced casts and crews in the Academy Award category for Best Picture nominees.

As a gamer, some other notable games that could snag the Stamp this year are “Atlas” and “A Family Affair”, along with titles like “Babygirl”, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, “Blink Twice”, “Challengers”, “Descendants: The Rise of Red”, “Fly Me to the Moon”, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”, “Inside Out 2”, “It Ends With Us”, “Madame Web”, “Mean Girls”, “Moana 2”, “My Old Ass”, “The Six Triple Eight”, “Venom: The Last Dance” and “Woman of the Hour”, to name a few.

Today, the roster has been unveiled by ReFrame – an initiative started by Sundance Institute and Women in Film Los Angeles (previously known as WIF), launched back in 2017 with the aim of promoting gender equality. This partnership with IMDbPro helps them analyze hiring patterns across all 100 films, using data from the latter. Movies receiving Stamps are those that employ women (or individuals identifying or expressing underrepresented genders) in at least half of the key roles.

According to the data, Stamped movies in the top 100 earned approximately twice as much as non-Stamped projects at the global box office, totaling around $293.9 million compared to $117.8 million. However, it’s worth noting that the average budget for a Stamped film decreased by $18 million from $63 million in 2023 to $45 million last year. The number of women directors also declined from 20 to 14 based on data from 2023, but leading acting roles achieved parity with 51 films featuring women.

The recently released document features an analysis, breaking down the proportion of the top 100 movies produced by each company that fulfilled the ReFrame Stamp standards. Notably, Netflix and Amazon are at the forefront, having received the ReFrame Stamp for over half of their respective releases.
