As a seasoned critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that this year’s Golden Globes nominations have left me quite intrigued and excited! The diversity and talent on display are truly a testament to the power of storytelling and the resilience of artists in today’s ever-evolving world.
The film version of “Wicked,” directed by Jon M. Chu, has proven its popularity as it shatters box office records to become the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation ever made. It’s currently flying high with four Golden Globe nominations, including one for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Here are all the nominees in the list provided below.
Ariana Grande received her first Golden Globe nomination as Glinda, while Cynthia Erivo, starring as Elphaba, secured her fourth nomination for the film. This follows two nominations she received in 2020 for her acting and singing roles in ‘Harriet’, and a nomination in 2022 for her work on the series ‘Genius’.
Suitably, due to its impressive earnings at the box office, the movie Wicked was also recognized in the category honoring cinematic and box office achievements. This category, introduced during last year’s Golden Globes, essentially highlights the impact of blockbuster films that have left a substantial mark both domestically and internationally.
As a devoted cinephile, I was taken aback to learn that director Chu, along with talented writers like Winnie Holzman (the author of the original novel) and Dana Fox, were all overlooked in their respective categories during the awards season. The enchanting songs and music from “Wicked” didn’t even get a nod because they stemmed from the stage musical, making them not entirely original to the film.
