As Street Fighter 6’s champ, Kakeru (that’s me), I walked away from Capcom Cup 11 not only with the coveted trophy but also a cool million dollars richer. The outcome could’ve been different if I hadn’t listened to my wife. You see, during some matches, I was contemplating using Mai Shiranui, but luckily for my Ryu main self, she managed to convince me otherwise.
This year at the Capcom Cup, a 27-year-old player had an incredible winning streak, with just one set loss against another Japanese player named Tokido in the group stage. Later, he defeated players such as Dual Kevin, NoahTheProdigy, Leshar, and young sensation Blaz. He outplayed Blaz not once but twice – first during the winner’s quarters and then again in the grand finals.
In contrast to its popularity, Mai Shiranui was scarcely noticed at the Ryogoku Kokugikan. Few competitors opted to use her, primarily as a counter strategy against underperforming characters like Nephew, OilKing, and Xiaohai, yet their outcomes were unimpressive.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve been frequently spotting Kakeru back on the Japanese scene, showcasing his favorite character post-buff updates. His choice of often playing SNK’s representative suggests that she might be a strategic backup he can rely on for specific matchups.

During a post-finals interview conducted by EventHubs and then translated, Kakeru was questioned as to why he didn’t choose Mai in the Street Fighter 6 ranked matches despite investing significant time with her character.
“I wanted to use Mai and that’s actually the reason me and my wife were fighting. In the end, we decided together ‘JP is going to work better,’ so I decided to stick with JP only for the event.”
It appears that Kakeru’s wife encouraged him to maintain his virtuous behavior, reminiscent of Masahiro Sakurai’s words, or perhaps she motivated him with the wisdom of Sanford Kelly, urging him to “choose wisely” and claim the $1 million prize.
Without a doubt, the Capcom Cup 11 was a thrilling tribute to Street Fighter 6, held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena. In fact, the company has already announced their plans to return to this same venue in the coming year.
