As a long-time fan of Will Ferrell and the classic holiday movie “Elf”, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions seeing my beloved Buddy the Elf stumble through adulthood in such a relatable way. Having grown up watching the original film countless times during the holidays, it was always a joy to see Ferrell bring Buddy to life with his infectious enthusiasm and childlike wonder.
However, hearing about Ferrell’s decision to pass on a sequel leaves me feeling a tad disappointed. While I understand the desire to move on to new roles and challenges, it’s hard not to feel a twinge of regret that we won’t get to see Buddy return to the screen.
That being said, Ferrell’s recent stunt at the L.A. Kings-Philadelphia Flyers game was a fun reminder that he can still bring the magic of Buddy to life in unexpected ways. And who knows? Maybe one day we’ll get a surprise visit from Buddy the Elf once again, bringing laughter and holiday cheer to audiences everywhere.
On a lighter note, I can’t help but chuckle at the thought of Buddy the Elf with a two-day stubble, smoking a “cigarette”, and glowering at the camera – sounds like something he’d do when he finds out his beloved maple syrup is running low!
Buddy the Elf has fallen on hard times.
At an NHL game, it was none other than Will Ferrell who made an appearance, clad in attire reminiscent of his cherished role from the 2003 family film “Elf,” but with a clever tweak to the character.
Ferrell attended Sunday’s L.A. Kings-Philadelphia Flyers game at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena.
At that location, the 57-year-old portrayed the perpetually cheerful character named Buddy, but with a slight beard from not shaving for two days, holding what appeared to be a cigarette, consuming beer, and giving an angry glance towards the camera.
Originally, Ferrell entertained fans with a nostalgic, free performance, but he chose not to reprise his role in the film’s sequel. In 2021, he explained to The Hollywood Reporter that he declined a proposed sequel script, which was already completed, offering him $29 million to play Buddy again.
He expressed that he would’ve needed to endorse the film sincerely, which felt like saying, “Oh gosh, it’s not great. But I couldn’t resist the huge paycheck.” However, he pondered, “Can I really utter those words? I don’t think so, so I guess I can’t be part of the film.
In 2003, a comedy movie directed by Jon Favreau was released, featuring Will Ferrell as a man who grew up with elves at the North Pole. This character later ventures to New York in search of his biological father, resulting in numerous humorous scenes where he struggles to adapt. While filming, Ferrell recalled running around New York City in bright yellow leggings and contemplating, “This could be it; this might be the end.
In THR’s initial assessment, the critic pointed out that while it may be stretching things to call “Elf” an instant holiday classic, nonetheless, it is undoubtedly a delightfully enjoyable and well-cast film suitable for all ages.
The movie earned an impressive $220 million at the box office, ultimately solidifying its status as a cherished Christmas tradition. It consistently remains among the most frequently watched films during the festive season.
