As a gamer with a deep appreciation for music and social activism, I find Will.i.am’s latest release, “Yes She Can,” to be a powerful testament to his dedication towards promoting positive change. Growing up in a multicultural neighborhood, I’ve always admired artists who use their platform to inspire and bring people together.
On Sunday, Will.i.am unveiled a new song and video, expressing his support for Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate running for U.S. President.
Two days prior to the election, Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas unveiled a song titled “Yes She Can,” which was released as Harris prepares to compete against Donald Trump, the Republican candidate.
In this song, the lyrics express concern about America and its inability to get along: “Mom, why is there trouble in America? Why can’t we coexist in America? There seems to be something amiss in America. People are watching as the oppressor thrives.
He continues by crooning about how America, once a unified nation, has become “simply divided,” as clips from the January 6th Capitol riots are displayed.
All of us, being immigrants, are unique individuals, but united, we can shatter the boundaries and register to vote for our own futures. Do it for your children, both daughters and sons, and your spouse. If you’re a woman, vote for your rights, and safeguard them from being taken away. We have the potential to be better than ever before. A woman is about to become our president.
In the chorus, it repeatedly says “She can, yes she can,” accompanied by visuals of people casting their votes at polling stations, the Statue of Liberty standing tall, and an American flag fluttering in the wind held by a girl. Additionally, there’s a scene of protests outside the Capitol with signs that read “Hands off our rights.
Will.i.am posted the video on YouTube and on social media. On Instagram, he included the caption that read, in part: “This is a heartfelt anthem celebrating Kamala Harris and the power of every people… With Election Day just around the corner, i wanted to score the movement, and create a call to action, and a promise of what we can achieve together… Join me as we shine a spotlight not only on the journey of Kamala Harris and the change thats coming, but also on the everyday heroes and #PowerfulWoman who breathe life into the world. 🙌🏾 This is a celebration of resilience, hope, and unstoppable spirit…”
He mentioned that the song and video were designed as a tribute to mothers, single mothers, stepmothers, sisters, aunts, nieces, wives, best friends, extraordinary women, queens, princesses, presidents, CEOs, doctors, nurses, programmers, scientists, astronauts, researchers, religious leaders, caregivers, lawmakers, nurturers, educators, mentors, professors, business owners, supervisors, and the life-giving entrances that women represent.

As a gamer, I can’t help but notice the vibe of this new tune. It seems like it could be a spiritual successor to will.i.am’s 2008 hit “Yes We Can.” That song and its video were all about rallying voters for Barack Obama, if you remember.
