Impractical Jokers” is a show that feeds off chaos and pranks. Led by an improv comedy group called The Tenderloins, it uses real people and hidden cameras to create hilarious moments – however, these unsuspecting individuals are the ones who end up laughing, as each episode features stunts, jokes, and practical tricks that often involve one or more of the group tricking each other, sometimes with famous friends along for the ride. The series has been so successful it’s spawned four spin-offs and a special movie, making “Impractical Jokers” TruTV’s leading program.
The lineup for The Tenderloin has remained unchanged since “Impractical Jokers” started airing on TruTV, consisting of friends Sal Vulcano, Brian “Q” Quinn, James “Murr” Murray – who have been close since high school, even before they gained their current fame. A fact that might not be well-known by “Impractical Jokers” fans is that Joe Gatto left the series in 2021. He announced his departure on Instagram, stating he needed more time to spend with his family, as he was separating from his wife. However, his statement did not rule out a potential return, perhaps even as a guest star on the show.
After making amends with his wife Bessy, he reappeared in public spotlight through a stand-up comedy performance and a Hulu special in 2025. However, when TheWrap asked about returning to the program, his answer was a definitive no. “I won’t be appearing as a guest on my own show,” he stated. “It just doesn’t feel right, and I can’t promise to return to it. I’ve moved past the show, the show has moved past me. I am so disconnected from it.” This doesn’t imply that he no longer keeps in touch with his old friends; on the contrary, he would be open to future collaborations beyond the “Impractical Jokers” franchise.
Joe Gatto still likes his friends, but has moved on
Joe Gatto expresses that although he won’t be working alongside his former “Impractical Jokers” colleagues in a regular capacity, there are no grudges held and he enjoys spending time with them socially. Interestingly enough, he also mentioned that he’d prefer to wrap up their professional association on a positive note and potentially collaborate on future projects together. As he put it, “I’ve told all the jokes I need to tell, but wrapping things up in a pleasant manner is definitely something I’d be interested in.” He added that they’ve discussed this possibility somewhat, so while it’s not the end of their collaborative efforts, it may not mean performing together on stage forever.
In other words, Gatto openly confessed to People that he hasn’t viewed the series since parting ways with it. He explained, “I strive for consistency and never watched it.” “I didn’t watch it on TV,” he added. “Instead, I always watched the edited versions of the show because I was involved in editing. Once I stopped editing, I didn’t have to watch it as frequently.
Gatto leads a bustling, multifaceted life beyond the show. He co-hosts a podcast named Two Cool Moms, operates a pet adoption charity for strays called Gatto Pups & Friends, and has authored a children’s book titled “Where’s Bearry?” In addition, his stand-up career thrives, and he aims to diversify into the realm of screenwriting and filmmaking within the entertainment industry. With such a full schedule, it’s unlikely that you’ll catch him making lighthearted appearances on camera with his old companions; however, as Gatto himself put it, “never say never.
