Will Smith Pays Tribute to Late Fresh Prince Producer Quincy Jones in Sweet Post

As a fervent admirer of the arts and the illustrious careers that have graced our screens and speakers for decades, I find myself deeply moved by the lives and legacies of two extraordinary individuals – Will Smith and Quincy Jones. While their paths may seem disparate at first glance, they share a common thread: the transformative power of mentorship.

Hollywood star Will Smith took to social media to express a heartfelt tribute to Quincy Jones, the legendary producer and composer who passed away on November 3rd. Smith, who was relatively new to acting when he started on NBC’s ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ sitcom, can partly attribute his success in the role to Jones. Smith shared his emotional tribute to Jones through an Instagram post:

Quincy Jones serves as an exceptional guide, a parental figure, and a cherished confidant. He guided me towards my most profound qualities, stood up for me, nourished me, motivated me, ignited my creativity, and occasionally corrected me when necessary. Until I could spread my own wings, he allowed me to borrow his.

Currently, Smith is a renowned actor who won an Oscar for his role (Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, King Richard). However, it was back in 1990 when The Fresh Prince television series started that Smith’s significant acting experience was limited to the music videos he made as part of the hip hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince.

As Smith perfected his acting skills in television, Hollywood eventually called for him. In 1995, the star of “The Fresh Prince” teamed up with Martin Lawrence to form another renowned duo in the movie “Bad Boys”. Important roles in cinema soon followed, including “Independence Day” (1996), “Men in Black” (1997) and “Ali” (2001). These roles solidified Smith’s status as a star in Hollywood. Jones was one of those who supported the budding actor during his journey in both small and big screen projects.

Quincy Jones Leaves Behind a Legendary Legacy

91-year-old Quincy Jones passed away on November 3rd at his Los Angeles residence. Even if his career had solely encompassed producing Michael Jackson’s album “Thriller” and Will Smith’s TV series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” he would still be remembered for his influential work in the realms of music and television.

Yet, the lasting impact Jones created was filled with awards and recognition. Nevertheless, his death was an intensely private grief for his family, as expressed in a statement issued by Arnold Robinson, his representative, according to Variety:

Tonight, with hearts heavy yet resilient, it’s with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved father and brother, Quincy Jones. Although this is an immense loss for our family, we honor his remarkable life and acknowledge that there will never be another quite like him. He was truly unique, and we will cherish his memory dearly.

It brings us great satisfaction and deep esteem to realize that the affection and happiness which defined him were disseminated worldwide via everything he produced. His melodies and unending love ensure that Quincy Jones’ spirit remains everlasting.

Born in Chicago, the individual known as ones amassed a total of 28 GRAMMY Awards throughout his impressive career. Winning that many statuettes adorned with the image of the famous gramophone is indeed an esteemed accomplishment. Interestingly, only two musical artists have been honored more times than Jones – BeyoncĂ© currently holds 32 GRAMMYS, while conductor Georg Solti has amassed 31 awards as of the 2024 ceremony.

In terms of accumulated awards, it’s hard to find a legacy as richly adorned as the one Quincy Jones has assembled. His trophy case houses an Oscar (Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award), which he received posthumously at the 2025 ceremony, and another Honorary Academy Award that will be bestowed upon him in the future. Furthermore, he won a Primetime Emmy for his exceptional music composition on the TV miniseries Roots (Outstanding Achievement in Music Composition for a Series – Dramatic Underscore), and a Tony in 2016 for The Color Purple (Best Revival of a Musical).
