Will Trent Season 3: Fans Divided Over Will and Angie’s Turbulent Journey

Ever since the 2023 debut, I’ve been hooked on “Will Trent” – one of my favorite prime-time shows I eagerly wait for each week. Its captivating performances and gripping plotlines consistently surpass my anticipations. The series seems to get better with time.

Although the third season of Will Trent has only aired a handful of episodes so far, I’m optimistic that it will rank among the show’s finest installments yet. Each episode has been packed with captivating storylines, particularly those focusing on the weekly cases. Season 3 also marks a new phase in the lives of many cherished characters. I must admit, I’m thoroughly enjoying the season, but I find myself torn about a significant ongoing plotline.

We need to discuss it.

Warning Will Trent Season 2 and Season 3 Episodes 1-4 spoilers are ahead. Proceed with caution.

Will Arresting Angie Was A Huge Game Changing Moment In Season 2

In the finale of its second season, Will Trent (Ramon Rodriguez) apprehended Angie (Erika Christensen), who had concealed Crystal’s (Chapel Oaks) murder of Lenny (French Stewart). This was a significant turning point for the series. Distraught by his role in the events, Will temporarily stepped away from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). The third season of Will Trent began several months later, with Will and Angie no longer employed at the GBI.

By the conclusion of “Will Trent” Season 3, Episode 3 titled “Find a New Pond,” they had returned to their old workplace full-time. The ex-pair didn’t delve into their problems until the next episode, but it became a significant storyline in the early episodes of the season. Will and Angie have informed others that their past relationship is beyond repair, yet throughout the initial stages of the season, this has been a key plot element.

As a devoted movie fan, I can’t help but feel the weight of the moment when Angie was arrested. It’s not every day you see a romantic partner being apprehended, and it seems almost irreversible. For a moment, I thought her journey on ‘Will Trent’ might have reached its premature end. I was bracing for her to serve some jail time or face an indefinite suspension.

In a novel twist for the narrative, Season 3 has intricately woven Angie and Will’s actions into its central storylines. However, these impacts are not as I initially anticipated, which leaves me puzzled as to how their journey might conclude in this season.

…But It Has Been Anticlimatic For Angie’s Career In Will Trent Season 3

In my opinion, Season 3 could’ve taken an intriguing turn by having Angie face legal troubles, either through a trial or imprisonment. This scenario might have given Will Trent room to explore new storylines and reduce the emphasis on weekly cases. The dramatic journey of Angie defending her actions could have been an engaging theme for Season 3. However, I never imagined Angie leaving the series permanently or serving a lengthy prison sentence. Instead, I speculated that the writers would use this situation to put Angie in peril, potentially risking everything she had built.

Initially, Angie found herself taking a short-term job at a country club. This stint took away some of the thrill she used to experience with the GBI. Additionally, she had to attend court hearings and attempt to lift her suspension. However, Angie’s absence from the GBI was brief, spanning just three episodes. Her quick return to the GBI made her past actions appear less severe. The new season begins several months following the finale, yet it seems that this timeframe is insufficient considering the suspension duration.

In a more simplified and conversational tone: Angie concealed a murder which led to further murders. The perpetrators were not exactly individuals we’d shed tears for. Yet, one would anticipate moral standards and integrity from high-ranking government officials. Given the circumstances, it seems fair that Angie should have faced permanent job termination at least.

I’m hoping for a plotline that explores the leniency often shown to police officers when they break the law. It seems unfair, and we should see Will Trent tackle this issue. Angie’s actions, despite being well-intentioned, mirror instances where professionals in the legal field receive preferential treatment from the judicial system, which can be problematic.

I Support Will’s Decision To Arrest Angie And Am Conflicted On Her Response

From different angles, they both hold valid points. Angie feels that Will ought to have stood by her and prioritized her well-being if his love for her was genuine. On the other hand, Will maintains that Angie should have been truthful with him. Moreover, he can’t condone Angie’s illegal actions due to his commitment as a GBI agent. In their unique ways, they are both correct.

Instead, I tend to align with Will’s perspective. Lenny was despicable and Crystal was an unfortunate victim, making it understandable for Angie to intervene in order to shield Crystal from a criminal past. Yet, due to Angie’s actions, Crystal never received the assistance she truly needed. This lack of help ultimately drove her to suffer a mental collapse, leading to her transformation into a serial killer.

Several individuals lost their lives, among them Crystal. This tragedy occurred due to Angie’s protective actions. However, Angie must now face significant repercussions for her choices. Her actions involved concealing a murder, which is a criminal offense. Given these circumstances, Will couldn’t disregard this situation since it could lead him to overlook any future illegal activities by those he cares about. This raises the question: Could Will himself become a lawbreaker?

If Will forgives Angie, it might lead to a gray area in ethics. Over the years, Will has thrived due to his strong moral compass, orderliness, and maintaining balance against excessive disorder. Forgiving Angie could potentially trigger an undesirable chain of events.

While I can appreciate Angie’s point of view, I find myself at odds with her opinion. I don’t believe it’s fair of her to be so stern towards Will, given that his actions were essential for his survival rather than just a legal requirement. In addition, they helped him avoid losing himself. Interestingly, Angie admits that they both acted according to their beliefs. However, it seems she continues to pass judgment on him because of those actions.

I Hope Will Trent Truly Ends Will And Angie’s Romantic Relationship

Frankly, I’ve never found the relationship between Will and Angie appealing. It seemed like they clung to each other long after their connection should have ended due to excessive codependence. I wished they would move on to different romantic partners. The first two seasons kept bringing them back together, which only made me hope for their downfall more.

Initially, I wasn’t so opposed to their pairing in the story that I’d mind if Will Trent ended with them together. While it wouldn’t have been my first choice for either character, I could accept it. However, now that the writers are trying to make us think they’re no longer together, my feelings have shifted.

It seems the authors of the Will Trent series are developing a plotline suggesting that Angie can’t ever reconcile with Will, implying no romantic prospects for them in the future. Frankly, I’m rooting for this scenario to unfold as it opens up possibilities for both characters to pursue new relationships and find different, non-romantic endings.

I’m not too familiar with the “Will Trent” book series, but I do know that Angie isn’t the main love interest for Will in the books. As of now, his main love interest from the books hasn’t appeared on the show yet, but it doesn’t necessarily mean she will be his ultimate love interest. Based on what I understand, the TV show and Karin Slaughter’s well-known book series share the same name but have significant differences. Therefore, there’s a possibility that Will may end up with Angie or someone else in future developments.

In the third season of “Will Trent,” a fresh character named Marion (played by Gina Rodriguez) debuted, hinting at a potential blossoming romance between her and Will. I’m looking forward to watching their relationship unfold and seeing a change in dynamic for Angie as well.

…But I Hope They Repair Their Friendship

Instead of being fond of Will and Angie as a romantic pair, I appreciate their friendship and find it intriguing due to their long-standing history. They seem like soulmates in a non-romantic sense, and they clearly need each other. However, the tension between them is troubling, so I hope they can resolve it. As for their previous friendship, I’m not sure if returning to that state would be ideal.

Instead, I’d prefer to witness a fresh development of it. They may maintain their conflict, yet I want the series to conclude with them being on friendly terms once more.

The ongoing narrative of “Will Trent” may significantly shape the future of the series, but there’s a concern it might be reversed by the season finale. We hope the writers maintain their good judgment, ensuring that Will and Angie’s reunion doesn’t nullify the impact of their past decisions as they move forward in the storyline.

Will Trent airs Tuesdays on ABC and streams the following day on Hulu.
