As the season finale of Will Trent approaches on Tuesday, set for 2025 TV schedules, ABC’s procedural drama pulled off a significant surprise with the arrival of Yul Vazquez from Severance as a new cast member. In the second-to-last episode, he was unveiled as Sheriff Caleb Broussard, but later it was disclosed that he is the biological father of Ramón Rodriguez’s main character. The co-showrunner discusses this twist and the impact on the storyline after Vazquez joined the cast.
In light of James Ulster, portrayed by Greg Germann, claiming to be Will’s biological father at the end of Season 1, it came as a shock when it turned out another character was actually his real dad, given this plot twist differed from the original books. However, it aligns with the impressive performance of Season 3. Daniel Thomsen shared with Variety that they aimed to introduce a character who could match Will’s stature and maintain an emotional connection while also causing tension.
We aimed to distinctly present Caleb as an unusual law enforcement officer, one with unique methods for his job and unconventional views on justice and duty. However, it’s evident they share some striking similarities. What caught me off guard about Yul was that I expected more conflict between them, given our initial character concept.
Transitioning from a serial killer as one’s biological father to someone in law enforcement definitely brings about a significant shift. Fortunately, Will had some prior experience working with Caleb which made the revelation less shocking. Initially, the situation was tense, but Will gradually opened up more once the truth was out. Additionally, Vazquez added depth to Caleb’s character, emphasizing the complexity of their relationship and suggesting that there is a richer backstory waiting to be explored.
In the role he played, I found myself yearning for their scenes even more. Consequently, for the upcoming season, it seems our task lies in creating circumstances that maintain some conflict and prevent them from becoming overly affectionate towards each other.
Although Season 4 might predominantly delve into Will’s relationship with Caleb, and examine their past and future prospects, it doesn’t mean James won’t be coming back. Co-showrunner Liz Heldens hinted that there is more story to tell about Will dealing with the recent revelations, and James will play a role in it as well.
It’s likely that James Ulster will offer an interesting perspective when he learns about Will discovering his real biological father, and this could make for an engaging tale for us.
Previously, it was made known that a new cast member would bring changes to ‘Will Trent’, and indeed, this has come to pass. The upcoming Season 4 of ‘Will Trent’ promises intrigue as we follow how the storyline unfolds and how characters like Will, Caleb, and James respond. Unfortunately, viewers will have to wait until mid-2026 for Season 4, but the delay may be worth it if it means uncovering more about Will’s personal life.
Currently, we don’t know when Season 4 of “Will Trent” is set to air, as it won’t be until early 2026. It’s likely that the premiere date won’t be unveiled until later in this year. In the meantime, fans can catch up on the first three seasons with a Hulu subscription. The upcoming season promises excitement, and given the recent twist, it’ll be intriguing to find out what unfolds. So, keep an eye out for when Season 4 of “Will Trent” finally hits the screens.
