As a long-time fan of the original “Twister” movie from 1996, I must admit that my excitement was through the roof when I heard about the sequel, “Twisters,” hitting theaters recently. I’ve been following the development of this project for quite some time, and it feels surreal to finally witness the culmination of decades-long anticipation.
It took approximately twenty-nine years, as I see from the calendar, for supporters of Twister, the renowned movie about chasing storms written by Michael Crichton and produced by Steven Spielberg, to receive a long-awaited sequel. This new installment, titled Twisters, is now showing in cinemas near you (secure your tickets here). Unlike typical sequels, Twisters can be considered a fresh start with numerous acknowledgements to the 1996 classic.
Instead of rejoining Jo Harding (Helen Hunt) and her elite team of cyclone experts, the movie presents a fresh cast headed by New York meteorologist Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and social media sensation Tyler “Tornado Chaser” Owens (Glen Powell). As a tornado enthusiast, I’m thrilled to follow this new wave of storm trackers as they crisscross the Midwestern US. With their youthful energy and innovative approaches, it seems like an excellent opportunity to expand the Twister IP into a larger, more spectacular film series.
Will Twisters Get a Sequel?
It’s too early to make a definitive conclusion about that issue, but the glowing critic reviews and impressive opening weekend sales are promising signs.
Yahoo Entertainment recently asked some cast members for their views on a possible Twister sequel. Edgar-Jones quipped, “They would need to append more ‘s’ to the name Twister.”
In the case of such a film, Powell remarked, it ultimately depends on the audience’s response. If they show interest and demand more, our talented team is always ready to create another compelling narrative.
Katy O’Brian, who portrays Dani in the Tornado Wrangler team of Owens, expressed her preference for keeping the story as is. She pondered, “What should we call it?” she wondered aloud. “When a movie is excellently crafted and doesn’t require a follow-up, maybe it’s best to avoid making one.”
Brandon Perea, formerly of “Nope” and now playing Tyler’s trusty sidekick Boon, proposed an intriguing idea: a prequel focusing on the Tornado Wranglers. These seemingly reckless individuals hold hidden depths, and Perea expressed his curiosity, “Could we make a prequel?” he asked, eager to discover the backstory behind Tyler and Boone’s friendship.
Is Twisters Streaming On Peacock?
Universal Pictures has confirmed that the film will be exclusively streamed on Peacock this year, but we don’t have an exact date yet.
On NBCUniversal’s platform, there are two monthly subscription options at present: Premium, which costs $7.99 with ads, and Premium Plus, priced at $13.99 without ads and with download access for selected titles. For students, the annual cost of the Premium plan is reduced to a mere $1.99!
