William Ransom Has Gone Off the Rails in ‘Outlander’ Season 7

As a long-time fan of Outlander, I must say that this latest development with William Ransom has me utterly captivated! The young man’s life, until now, seemed so picture-perfect, but as we all know, appearances can be deceiving.

Could it be that every week feels like your birthday since November 22? That’s because Outlander, the highly-anticipated historical drama, has made its comeback! Yes, you heard it right – it airs weekly on Starz. The series is based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels and revolves around Jamie and Claire Fraser, whose love transcends even time itself.

In Season 7 of Outlander, Jamie, Claire, and their companions persistently encounter challenges that intensify, even shocking our favorite characters with significant revelations. A particular character gains significance in this narrative, and Episode 12 of the new season focuses on him as he navigates (or avoids dealing with) a transformative piece of knowledge.

Who Is William Ransom in ‘Outlander’?

From the age of six, William Ransom (Charles Vandervaart) was brought up by Lord John Grey, whom he regarded as his father. However, during his childhood, he also formed a strong bond with Ludovic Ransom, the Earl of Ellesmere, who was his biological father but their relationship was kept secret from him. At that time, Ludovic, or Jamie as William knew him, was on parole and staying with the Dunsany family after being released from Ardsmuir prison. Lord John pledged to care for William and they both agreed he would never learn about his true ancestry.

During my travels to America, I lost Isobel, and Lord John and I found ourselves visiting Jamie and Claire. Though the Greys and the Frasers have always been friends, I must admit that I harbored some reservations towards Jamie, for I knew of his past convictions. Even during my military days, I recognized Jamie as an honorable man, yet I could never fully trust him, particularly because our meetings were infrequent. My standing in society has always mattered greatly to me, given the affluence and prestige that my family enjoyed. However, I believe a movie should be made about the turbulent familial relationships within the Dunsany, Grey, and Fraser clans; their dynamics are nothing short of captivating.

What Happened to ‘Outlander’s William Ransom?

In the 12th episode of Outlander’s Season 7, if William’s family resemblance didn’t make it clear that he is Jamie’s biological son (a fact that wasn’t surprising to Rachel), then his actions in that episode provided undeniable proof. After all, he’s a Scot. At the close of Episode 11, an unfortunate turn of events led William to overhear Jamie, Claire, and Lord John confirming that he is indeed Jamie’s son – a fact known for quite some time. Learning such a significant truth in this manner was tough, and understandably, William reacted uncharacteristically. To put it mildly, he displayed some rebellious behavior. This revelation was unexpected, considering how well-mannered William always seemed, even as a young boy.

It’s no surprise that William is thrown off balance, given his upbringing which instilled in him the belief that his social standing was paramount. He has always strived to emulate the successful men in his family and yearned for nothing less than being recognized as an honorable man. However, upon discovering his true ancestry, a matter further explored in the spinoff Outlander: Blood of My Blood, he finds himself engulfed in turmoil. He’s grappling with the realization that his bloodline is not what he thought it was, his lineage is not as prestigious as believed, and his true name belongs to a man convicted of treason. Despite Jamie’s good deeds and their close bond when William was young, this revelation puts him in a difficult position. He must either reveal the truth and potentially lose everything he has worked for or live a lie and never feel worthy enough.

William Ransom’s Possible Future In ‘Outlander’ Season 7

Without a doubt, the revelation about his ancestry left William taking some regrettable actions. He showed disdain towards those he held dear and, to be honest, jeopardized everyone’s safety, including himself. While it wasn’t the best approach in certain aspects, there were moments where it could be justified. Just like numerous characters before him, William’s actions are genuine and believable, which is just one of the reasons why Outlander remains one of the finest historical TV series ever produced.

Currently, William’s future remains somewhat unclear due to his ongoing struggle to comprehend a life-altering revelation. Although Claire managed to alleviate some of his concerns by confirming the consensual nature of his conception, Lord John and Jamie have much more to help him understand. The shock of discovering that those he held dear had kept secrets about his true identity has left William engulfed in emotional turmoil. To make matters even more complex, William reacted impulsively by lashing out at Rachel and kissing her, despite the fact that she was already betrothed to Ian, whom he had apprehended in anger upon learning they were cousins. This reconciliation will undoubtedly prove intriguing, but it seems almost certain that a resolution is on the horizon.

In their past, William and John were very tightly bonded, and when he was younger, William also shared a powerful connection with Jamie. This may mean that in the future, he might appreciate being able to call two honorable men his fathers, and they will undoubtedly assist him in navigating his journey to discover his true identity. By the way, Outlander is aired weekly on Starz.
