Form an opinion: The upcoming movie releases for February 2025 offer a wide range of genres, from action-comedy to horror, drama and fantasy. Here are some highly anticipated titles:
As a cinephile, I must say that the upcoming movie season, particularly during winter, is a vibrant mix of genres that caters to every taste. You’ll find potential Oscar contenders, colossal family blockbusters, chilling horror films, pulse-pounding action flicks, and an assortment of other cinematic delights studios choose to unveil in the early months of the year. This diversity doesn’t stop at the big screen, as streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are also showcasing their significant releases around this festive period.
Movies shown at this year’s film festivals have been scheduled, aiming to create excitement ahead of the voting period for major awards. Additionally, the Thanksgiving and Christmas weekends are now common release dates for some of the year’s most anticipated blockbusters. Even traditionally quiet months like January and February have seen a surge in noteworthy films in recent times. Starting from the weekend before Thanksgiving, highly-anticipated sequels such as “Gladiator II” and “Wicked” will debut, but every week following promises at least one (or more) movie worth looking forward to, whether it’s a trip to the cinema or a cozy night in.
This is MovieWeb’s Winter Movie Preview for 2024-2025.
November:
‘Gladiator II’ – Nov. 22
Discussions about a “Gladiator” sequel have been ongoing since 2001, but it’s only recently that audiences have finally seen a worthy continuation. Renowned director Ridley Scott is back at the helm for this new chapter in the growing series, with an array of fresh acting talents gracing the screen, as well as some familiar faces.
Echoes The Original, But With A Few Surprises
I’m thrilled to be part of an impressive ensemble starring Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Joseph Quinn. Notably, Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi are returning to their roles from the original film. In essence, it seems that Gladiator II is following a similar narrative thread, with Paul Mescal stepping into Russell Crowe’s shoes as Maximus’ son. However, Julian Roman, our esteemed reviewer at MovieWeb, points out in his Gladiator II review that the third act introduces some unexpected twists to keep the story fresh and avoid a sense of cinematic repetition.
‘Wicked’ – Nov. 22
The movie version of a highly acclaimed musical from this century has generated a lot of buzz as one of the year’s most discussed films. With an impressive cast that includes Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and Peter Dinklage among others, plus Jon M. Chu (known for “Crazy Rich Asians”) directing, it seems unlikely that Wicked won’t be among the top-earning films this season.
One of the Highest-Rated Musical Adaptations of All Time
The musical adaptation of “Wicked” has been highly praised following its initial reviews, boosting anticipation for the franchise as we approach “Wicked Part Two,” set for release on November 21, 2025. This article will focus on the first part of the critically acclaimed prequel to “The Wizard of Oz.
‘Flow’ – Nov. 22
In simple terms, the movie titled “Flow” appears to be an extraordinary animated production featuring a lone cat who finds himself joining forces with diverse wild animals in order to navigate a post-disaster world submerged by a massive flood. With almost a flawless rating on Rotten Tomatoes and strong indications of being a potential nominee for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, it’s definitely worth checking out.
A Captivating Animated Film Without Dialogue
Remarkably, the movie consists primarily of environmental sounds from animals and lacks dialogue. The film, titled Flow, is director Gints Zilbalodis’ subsequent work to his previous successful animated feature, Away (2019), which received a flawless 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin.’ – Nov. 22
To offer a fresh perspective as we approach Thanksgiving, “Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin.” recounts the true tale of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor who preached love yet secretly plotted to assassinate Hitler. In this movie, Bonhoeffer grapples with his beliefs and ultimately leans on his faith as he is incarcerated by the Nazis.
A Faith-Based Movie Anyone Can Enjoy
Without a shadow of a doubt, the movie produced by Angel Studios – renowned for creating shows like The Chosen – carries a distinctly Christian viewpoint. However, it’s a narrative that transcends faith and can resonate with everyone. As MovieWeb critic Julian Roman notes in his review of Bonhoeffer, “This is an open display of faith-based storytelling, yet one doesn’t need to be religious or Christian to relate to its universally relatable themes.
‘Moana 2’ – Nov. 27
It appears that Thanksgiving is shaping up to be an exciting time for music enthusiasts, as “Wicked” and “Moana 2” are set to premiere only a few days apart. The success of “Moana” as Disney’s most-streamed movie ever has raised high expectations for the sequel to outperform its original box office performance. However, fans will miss Lin-Manuel Miranda, who contributed to the first film with his original songs. In his absence, Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow have been assigned to write new tunes for the sequel. Notably, this duo is famous for their Grammy-winning album, “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical.
A Sequel With Big Shoes To Fill
As I settle into my seat and the lights dim, I find myself eagerly anticipating a journey through the breathtaking world of Moana 2. Three years have passed since the events of the original tale, and we now join our intrepid heroine, Moana, on her quest to fulfill her ancestors’ mission. This time, she aims to bridge the gap between her people and the other enchanting islands scattered across the vast ocean. The adventure that unfolds promises to be a captivating continuation of this beloved story.
‘Queer’ – Nov. 27
Luca Guadagnino’s second film of the year, titled “Queer – Challengers,” is generating buzz for its potential impact during this awards season. After receiving positive feedback following its debut at the Venice Film Festival and subsequent screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, it seems poised to create a stir. Daniel Craig headlines in this A24 drama where an American expat finds himself in a passionate, almost compulsive relationship with a younger man, played by Drew Starkey.
Daniel Craig Looks For His First Oscar Nomination
In a twist of fate, both Guadagnino and Craig are anticipating their debut Oscar nominations for this movie adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ book with the same title. The promotional materials for “Queer” hint at a lengthy, explicit exploration of sexuality, drug use, and self-indulgence. Yet, as Jericho Tadeo points out in his MovieWeb review, “… while Queer certainly delivers on its promises — if you catch my drift — it provides an abundance that viewers might not have anticipated.
‘Maria’ – Nov. 27
Film director Pablo Larraín, known for “Jackie” and “Spencer”, is returning with another biographical drama titled “Maria”. This year, experience a deeply introspective film centered around the last days of the iconic opera singer, Maria Callas.
Angelina Jolie “Mesmerizes” In This Role
In the movie “Maria,” Angelina Jolie plays Callas, a role that, as per Greg Archer’s review on MovieWeb, is captivating or spellbinding. The film premieres in theaters on November 27, and will be streamable on Netflix starting December 11.
‘The Seed of the Sacred Fig’ – Nov. 27
The Sacred Fig’s Seed is a chilling thriller that the director, Mohammad Rasoulof, along with the cast and crew, put their lives on the line to create. Intriguingly, Iranian authorities imprisoned Rasoulof before the film’s release, which compelled him to escape to Germany.
A Movie Shot In Secret
Hidden from public view due to the hardships faced by its director in Iran, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” narrates the tale of Iman, a judge investigating cases in Tehran who soon discovers his profession is far more hazardous than initially thought. With potential for multiple awards this season, the film promises to be a significant contender for Best Picture.
December:
‘Y2K’ – Dec. 6
In collaboration, Jonah Hill (producer) and director Kyle Mooney create a throwback to ’90s high school party films with a unique spin – a movie titled Y2K. Instead of the typical storyline, this film focuses on two socially awkward juniors who gatecrash a New Year’s Eve celebration happening in 1999. Initially, it appears to be a coming-of-age comedy. However, as the plot unfolds, the movie takes a darker turn, transforming into a satirical disaster film when it is disclosed that the Y2K virus is causing technology to malfunction and pose a threat to humanity.
High School Party Movie With a Twist
This dark comedy, set to hit theaters on December 6, features Rachel Zegler (from West Side Story), Jaeden Martell (known for It), and Julian Dennison (a star from Deadpool 2). Expect a generous dose of nostalgia-induced chuckles when you watch it!
‘Nightbitch’ – Dec. 6
As a film enthusiast, I can tell you that in “Nightbitch“, Amy Adams plays an artist who decides to be a stay-at-home mom, pausing her career for family life. However, this movie isn’t your typical family drama! Derived from the best-selling novel of the same name, Adams’ character, referred to as “Mother”, begins to transform into a dog. This unique twist sets “Nightbitch” apart from other films in its genre.
Absurd Premise Anchored by A-List Talent
The central idea, a blend of dark humor and gruesome imagery, is skillfully portrayed in this film by Adams’ acting and Marielle Heller’s direction. (e.g., The absurd premise of this black comedy/body horror film is effectively conveyed through Adams’ performance and the directorial skills of Marielle Heller.)
‘The Six Triple Eight’ – Dec. 6
Under the guidance of Tyler Perry, the film titled “Six Triple Eight” recounts the actual events surrounding the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only colored unit within the Women’s Army Corps during World War II. This captivating narrative focuses on the courageous women of Six Triple Eight as they tackled a mountainous backlog of mail (approximately 17 million letters), ensuring that these crucial messages reached soldiers on the battlefield, thereby boosting their morale significantly.
An Incredible True Story
‘The End’ – Dec. 6
One of the more distinctive films set to hit cinemas this winter is “The Final Act“, a musical movie that revolves around the apocalypse. This narrative follows a prosperous family who are sealed within a bunker following a global ecological disaster, making the world largely inhospitable. Their routine existence is disrupted, though, when an unexpected visitor knocks on their doorstep.
A Musical About the End of the World
Recently, after the acclaimed film “Wicked” showcasing musical theater prowess, comes “The End,” a movie that deviates from the usual Broadway-bound actors such as Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon. However, this unconventional film musical manages to pique interest with its intriguing concept and the captivating performances of George MacKay (from “1917”) and Moses Ingram (“The Queen’s Gambit”).
‘The Order’ – Dec. 6
In the gripping thriller, “The Order,” Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult take on leading roles. Law assumes the character of an FBI agent in the 1980s, hot on the trail of a series of bank robberies and armored car heists in the Pacific Northwest. Yet, his mission is not just to apprehend any ordinary criminal organization; instead, he aims to expose a dangerous faction of white supremacists as the culprits behind these crimes.
One of the Year’s Best Crime Thrillers
The film titled “The Order” has garnered much acclaim, with critics lauding Jude Law’s acting and the gripping narrative. At the Venice International Film Festival, it was met with a seven-minute standing ovation, while on Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts an impressive 86% positive rating.
‘Werewolves’ – Dec. 6
If you haven’t found what you’re looking for at the theaters during the December opening weekend, perhaps the horror movie titled “Werewolves” might catch your attention. This film is said to be a blend of “The Purge” and werewolf themes, as described by its star Frank Grillo. Interestingly, Grillo mentioned that the film’s werewolves were made real through an emphasis on practical effects.
‘The Purge’ x Werewolves
If the excitement in Grillo’s eloquent pitch doesn’t already give it away, the movie “Werewolves” seems to promise a fun, campy experience at the cinemas. If you’re in search of a gory action horror film, as the movie’s lead actor puts it, “… just go watch the movie.
‘Unstoppable’ – Dec. 6
The film “Unstoppable” narrates the remarkable true tale of Anthony Robles, a wrestler from the United States who triumphed in the NCAA championship in 2011, all while being born with only one leg. Jharrel Jerome, famous for his roles in “Moonlight” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” portrays Robles, complemented by a strong ensemble cast that includes Jennifer Lopez, Bobby Cannavale, Don Cheadle, and Michael Peña.
Inspirational True Story
Supporters of underdog sports narratives will be able to watch “Unstoppable” starting from its theater release on December 6, 2024, or stream it on Amazon Prime Video, available from January 16, 2025.
‘The Return’ – Dec. 6
Another movie, titled “The Return“, is set to hit theaters this first weekend of December, marking a bustling start to the month. This film is a modern retelling of the epic tale where the Greek hero Odysseus returns home after being away for 20 long years. In this adaptation, Ralph Fiennes portrays an aged and muscular Odysseus, determined to reclaim what he has lost and protect his family.
Ralph Fiennes Gets Ripped for New Role
After what appears to be an award-worthy performance in “Conclave“, Fiennes shifts gears into a more physically demanding character for “The Return>”. This transition is a new direction for the actor, and we’re eagerly anticipating this change on the movie screen.
‘Kraven the Hunter’ – Dec. 13
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming standalone film focusing on another iconic Spider-Man villain – Kraven the Hunter! Following the epic conclusion of Tom Hardy’s Venom trilogy with Venom 3: The Last Dance in October, it’s now Aaron Taylor-Johnson and company’s turn to take the lead in the Sony villain universe. While Kraven seems to stick closely to its comic book roots, it also appears to follow the trend set by Venom and Morbius by keeping Tom Holland’s Spider-Man out of the picture. However, what sets Kraven apart is its deeper exploration of the lore by introducing another longtime Spider-Man nemesis, Rhino. If Venom has shown us anything, it’s that there’s a wealth of entertainment (and box office success) to be found without the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man himself!
More R-Rated Comic Book Movies
Remarkably, it appears that Kraven the Hunter will follow in the footsteps of other movies by receiving an R-rating. Lately, films such as Deadpool and Wolverine have demonstrated that there is still a significant adult audience who are interested in mature adaptations of popular comic book characters. An R-rated film like Kraven is expected to be a high-octane action movie featuring beloved Marvel villains, brimming with violence and intense scenes.
‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of The Rohirrim’ – Dec. 13
Despite Season 2 of The Rings of Power being concluded, it doesn’t rule out the possibility of additional tales emerging from Middle-earth in 2024. A distinctive anime adaptation called The Lord of the Rings: The War of The Rohirrim, derived from the appendices within J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, diverges from the Peter Jackson films by taking place centuries before the primary trilogy’s events.
‘Lord of the Rings’ Goes Anime
As an ardent cinema enthusiast, I find myself captivated by the work of anime director Kenji Kamiyama, who’s known for his contributions as a background artist in timeless masterpieces like Akira and Kiki’s Delivery Service. This esteemed filmmaker has assembled some of the finest voice acting talents in the industry, even recruiting the talented Brian Cox from Succession for his latest project.
‘Nickel Boys’ – Dec. 13
Amazon MGM Studios boasts of a potential future “American masterpiece” with “The Nickel Boys“, a period drama directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker RaMell Ross (“Hale County This Morning, This Evening”). Based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “The Nickel Boys” tells the story of a black teenager in the Jim Crow South whose quick decision lands him in a notorious reform school at the very moment he dreams of going to college.
A Potential Masterpiece
It appears that “The Nickel Boys” is being discussed as a strong contender for numerous prestigious honors this year across various categories, such as Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Director, and perhaps even Best Picture.
‘September 5’ – Dec. 13
On December 15th, we can expect another potential award winner to hit the screens – “September 5”. Impressively receiving a perfect rating from MovieWeb’s Julian Roman, this gripping hostage thriller is being hailed as one of the standout movies of the year.
A Superb Hostage Thriller Based on a True Story
The movie, penned and helmed by Swiss director Tim Fehlbaum, narrates a real-life account of the 1972 Munich Olympic Hostage Crisis. However, this rendition provides an intimate perspective, portraying the events from the viewpoint of an ABC Sports team grappling with moral quandaries and dilemmas regarding journalistic ethics amidst the harrowing tale.
‘The Last Showgirl’ – Dec. 13
Having entertained audiences for three decades on the Vegas stage, I found myself compelled to reassess my future when unexpectedly, my show came to an end, titled “The Last Showgirl.” From its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, it’s been buzzing that I delivered a career-defining performance in this leading role.
The Performance of a Lifetime
The highly acclaimed festival film made a strategic, award-worthy debut on December 13, followed by a wider release on January 10. Although Anderson takes center stage, she’s backed by an impressive ensemble of actors, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka, Billie Lourd, and Jason Schwartzman.
‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ – Dec. 20
As per Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins, Mufasa: The Lion King serves as both a precursor and continuation to the 2019 photorealistic reboot. The narrative delves into the early life of Simba’s father, Mufasa, while also shedding light on the events that unfold in the Pride Lands following Scar’s dethronement.
A Sequel and a Prequel
The upcoming movie promises to delve deeply into the intricate bond between Mufasa and Scar, along with the trials faced by Kiara, Simba and Nala’s daughter. It’s quite challenging to envision Mufasa matching the staggering $1.6 billion earnings of its previous version at the box office. Nevertheless, it seems set to be a major release this holiday season.
‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ – Dec. 20
The film “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is an upcoming family-friendly movie set to release near Christmas. Over the years, studios have found it challenging to create successful video game adaptations for the cinema, but the “Sonic” series has mostly defied this norm with two consecutive successes.
Star-Studded Cast Adds Another A-Lister
The upcoming game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 aims to raise the stakes with the inclusion of beloved character Shadow (played by Keanu Reeves). Previously rumored retirements aside, this installment in the lively series has remarkably re-enlisted Jim Carrey as the nefarious Dr. Robotnik.
‘The Room Next Door’ – Dec. 20
Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton feature in “The Room Next Door“, a wittily somber drama that revolves around two former friends who reconnect under tragic circumstances: one being diagnosed with terminal cancer. As the medical treatment proves futile, Martha (Swinton) asks her dear friend Ingrid (Moore) to stay in the room adjacent (the title’s namesake) as she spends her final days.
A Darkly Funny Drama
In his critique for MovieWeb, Jericho Tadeo highly commended the on-screen pairing of Swinton and Moore in the film “The Room Next Door“. He described their interactions as being similar to a thrilling tennis match between top players, where they skillfully challenge each other’s beliefs and ideas, bringing out the most compelling aspects of one another.
‘The Brutalist’ – Dec. 20
Among the films on this list, only two have been awarded a rare perfect score by MovieWeb’s Julian Roman, with the second being “The Brutalist”. In his review, Roman described this nearly four-hour epic as a “cinematic masterpiece” and even suggested it could be the best movie of 2024. The historical drama from A24 revolves around Hungarian-Jewish architect László Toth, portrayed by Adrien Brody, who leaves Europe post-WWII in an effort to reconstruct his life in America.
One of the Year’s Best and Longest
In the realms of scriptwriting, direction, and performance – with stars like Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce, and Felicity Jones leading the charge – The Brutalist is poised to challenge for top honors in nearly every significant award category during this awards season.
‘Nosferatu’ – Dec. 25
Filmmaker Robert Eggers continues to impress, with every one of his first three directorial ventures – “The Witch, The Lighthouse,” and “The Northman ” – receiving a score of 90% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes. His upcoming work, a reimagining of the iconic vampire movie, is expected to deliver the ominous visuals and brooding atmosphere that Eggers is known for.
A New Take on a Classic
I firmly believe that “Nosferatu” is not just contending to be one of the finest horror films this year, but it’s also making a valiant effort to become one of the select genre productions to secure significant award recognition. With an outstanding ensemble cast led by Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Emma Corrin, this horror flick is poised to offer some compelling counter-programming during the holiday season.
‘Babygirl’ – Dec. 25
In the provocative film titled “Babygirl“, a high-powered executive (Nicole Kidman) finds herself in a steamy romance with a younger intern (Harris Dickinson), which could potentially jeopardize everything she’s built. This edgy A24 production, while not your typical holiday family movie, offers a dose of indulgence that many might crave during the festive season.
Nicole Kidman Gets Intense
Director Halina Reijn intends to capitalize on her recent triumph, following the widely praised horror-comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies”. This time around, she’s ventured into a different genre – an erotic thriller – that was so emotionally charged during production that Nicole Kidman required breaks while shooting.
‘The Fire Inside’ – Dec. 25
As a diehard fan, I can’t help but share my excitement for “The Fire Inside,” a gripping biopic that delves into the extraordinary life of boxing legend Claressa ‘T-Rex’ Shields, portrayed brilliantly by Ryan Destiny. This incredible woman made history as the first U.S. female boxer to claim an Olympic gold medal. The script for this captivating tale was masterfully crafted by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins, and it’s brought to life under the visionary guidance of debut director Rachel Morrison.
Not Your Average Sports Biopic
In his review of “The Fire Inside”, MovieWeb’s Murjani Rawls commends the acting of leads Destiny and Brian Tyree Henry, describing the movie as a remedy for ordinary sports biopics.
‘A Complete Unknown’ – Dec. 25
In a music biopic titled “A Complete Unknown,” Timothée Chalamet portrays Bob Dylan, considered one of America’s greatest songwriters. James Mangold, who previously directed the critically acclaimed music biopic “Walk the Line,” is at the helm of this project, promising excitement for fans.
Timothée Chalamet Embodies Bob Dylan
Not only do Bob Dylan specialists think Timothee Chalamet fits the role perfectly, but Bob Dylan himself also endorses the movie.
‘Better Man’ – Dec. 25
The film titled “Better Man” is a semi-autobiographical story that chronicles the journey of British pop sensation Robbie Williams, encompassing his rise, fall, and subsequent comeback. This isn’t your typical biopic; it promises an unconventional tale. To deliver on this promise, director Michael Gracey (known for “The Greatest Showman”) brings the music icon to life in a unique way – he transforms Robbie into an animated simian character.
An Unconventional Music Biopic
As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that Williams lends his voice to the CGI monkey character in this film, which is predominantly live-action. This biopic, receiving rave reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, will make its debut in select US theaters on December 25, before expanding nationwide on January 10.
January:
‘Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl’ – Jan. 3
As a devoted cinephile, I must confess my unwavering admiration for the exquisite stop-motion animated series, Wallace & Gromit. This British gem has consistently garnered exceptional praise, boasting near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes scores. The latest addition to their cinematic universe, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, joins an elite group of three other films in the series, all of which have managed a remarkable 100% score. Notably, the franchise’s most recent feature, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, remains a standout with an impressive 95%.
Another Acclaimed Entry in This Animated Franchise
As a movie connoisseur, I am thrilled to announce that starting from January 3rd, you can stream the cherished children’s series featuring the quirky inventor Wallace and his loyal beagle companion Gromit on Netflix. In this new adventure, our dynamic duo finds themselves in quite a pickle as they strive to halt the mischief wrought by Norbot, an AI “smart gnome” that has been stirring up trouble all over town with Wallace’s latest invention.
‘Den of Thieves 2: Pantera’ – Jan. 10
After a five-year gap, the action series spearheaded by Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. is now set to release its second installment. The initial film, titled “Den of Thieves,” focuses on Sheriff Big Nick O’Brien (played by Butler), who chases after notorious criminal Donnie Wilson (portrayed by Jackson Jr.).
‘Den of Thieves’ Goes International
In my perspective, while the initial film was primarily set in Los Angeles, the sequel titled “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” expands its horizons by venturing into international territories. Here, our protagonist Donnie makes a daring escape to Europe, where he plans his next grand heist. This time around, his target is none other than the world’s largest diamond exchange.
‘Paddington in Peru’ – Jan. 17
In recent times, fewer family-friendly films have garnered as much praise as the initial two Paddington movies. The upcoming third film, titled Paddington’s Journey, may see the departure of director Paul King and actress Sally Hawkins, but based on trailers and positive early reviews, it appears the franchise is still being handled competently.
‘Paddington’ is Still in Good Hands
Taking over from King and Hawkins is Dougal Wilson, who is directing a feature film for the first time, and actress Emily Mortimer (from “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Hugo”) is also part of the cast. Furthermore, Olivia Coleman, an Oscar winner, and Antonio Banderas, an Academy Award nominee, are joining the ensemble for Paddington’s upcoming grand adventure as he journeys to Peru to meet his aunt Lucy.
‘Wolf Man’ – Jan. 17
Leigh Whannell, responsible for the 2020 film “The Invisible Man,” is set to deliver another chilling monster movie remake, this time based on the classic character, the Wolf Man. In Whannell’s dark reinterpretation, a man (Christopher Abbott) finds himself cursed after being bitten by a werewolf. His wife (Julia Garner) and daughter (Matilda Firth) are caught in a harrowing situation with him as he undergoes a horrifying transformation into a monstrous creature, stranded in a secluded cabin.
‘The Invisible Man’ Director Takes On Another Classic Movie Monster
Just like how Whannell reimagined “The Invisible Man” with a contemporary twist on the curse, turning it into a disease instead of a supernatural occurrence, he intends to do the same for the “Wolf Man” tale. If this remake is even half as captivating as “The Invisible Man”, horror enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to.
‘Presence’ – Jan. 17
The film Presence aims to redefine the traditional haunted house genre by presenting it from the viewpoint of the ghost, instead of its usual perspective on the victims. Although a few may perceive this as a bit gimmicky, the movie is already garnering positive responses.
A New Take On the Haunted House Subgenre
At the Sundance Film Festival, director Steven Soderbergh’s new horror movie has been screened and is receiving favorable buzz and outstanding critiques. The film is being commended for its unconventional approach and the exceptional acting of its main star, Lucy Liu.
‘I’m Still Here’ – Jan. 17
Understand that “I’m Still Here (2024)” should not be mistaken for the 2010 film of the same name, this movie instead tells the story of a woman named Fernanda Torres whose husband, a congressman during Brazil’s military dictatorship, is suddenly taken away from her and their family. The film was awarded Best Screenplay at the Venice International Film Festival and has been selected as Brazil’s entry for the category of Best International Feature Film at the upcoming Academy Awards.
One of the Best International Films of the Year
Apart from “I’m Still Here” being strongly considered as a potential winner of the Best International Feature Film award, actress Fernanda Torres has delivered an outstanding performance that may lead to discussions about her being nominated for Best Actress.
‘Back in Action’ – Jan. 17
Titled “Back in Action,” this film is notable for being Cameron Diaz’s initial project since her retirement, and it marks one of Netflix’s significant premieres for the year. Joining forces with Jamie Foxx, they play former CIA agents who have transitioned into parenthood. However, their peaceful lives are disrupted when their identities are unveiled, forcing them to re-enter the world of espionage.
Cameron Diaz’s First Movie Since Returning from Retirement
This upcoming action-comedy appears to boast an impressive ensemble cast, including Glenn Close, Kyle Chandler, and Andrew Scott in secondary positions. With Seth Gordon (known for “Horrible Bosses”) at the helm, Netflix may just score a major success this year.
‘Flight Risk’ – Jan. 24
High Stakes Aerial Thriller offers an edge-of-your-seat adventure set high above the unspoiled Alaskan wilderness. The flight carries only three passengers – the pilot (Mark Wahlberg), a law enforcement officer (Michelle Dockery), and a criminal (Topher Grace) en route to court.
A Tense Thriller at 15,000 ft
Upon crossing the metaphorical neutral ground, it becomes clear that not all the passengers are as they appear. It’s also worth noting that “Flight Risk” marks Mel Gibson’s return to the director’s chair since his last project, “Hacksaw Ridge,” released in 2016.
‘One of Them Days’ – Jan. 24
While it’s less frequent today, “One of Them Days” aims to demonstrate that comedies still have a place in 2025. Keke Palmer and SZA play best friends and flatmates who are determined to make quick cash when they discover one of their boyfriends has already spent their rent money.
A New Comedy Coming to Theaters
Under the direction of Lawrence Lamont, renowned for his work on “Rap Sh!t”, and produced by Issa Rae, the comedy “One of Them Days” boasts an impressive background. Moreover, its trailer brims with humor.
‘You’re Cordially Invited’ – Jan. 30
Get ready for the hilarious collaboration between Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon as they star in a Prime Video comedy, creatively crafted by director Nicholas Stoller (known for “Neighbors” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”). This upcoming production, entitled “Double Trouble Weddings“, finds our comedic pair locked in competition at a venue that has accidentally been double-booked for two weddings.
Comedy Legends Team Up
In “You’re Cordially Invited,” set to stream on January 30, a woman (Witherspoon) organizing her sister’s wedding and a father (Ferrell) footing the bill for his daughter’s nuptials choose to collaborate on the venue, but as expected, events take an unexpected turn.
February:
‘Love Hurts’ – Feb. 7
Ke Huy Quan, known for his role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” will star in an upcoming action comedy titled “Love Hurts” next year. His character, Marvin, is a realtor who finds himself entangled with his criminal brother, played by Daniel Wu, once again.
Ke Huy Quan Goes ‘John Wick’
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the first teaser for “Love Hurts,” which seems to be drawing inspiration from the action-packed world of “John Wick,” promises not just mind-blowing action sequences but also a good dose of side-splitting humor. The talented trio of Ariana DeBose, Sean Astin, and the ever-amusing former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch are joining Quan and Wu in this upcoming adventure.
‘Universal Language’ – Feb. 12
In the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards, Canada presents a film entitled “Universal Language.” This absurdly humorous movie is set in an alternate reality of Canada, where Persian and French are recognized as the nation’s two primary languages. The narrative explores the lives of diverse characters whose stories gradually interconnect.
Absurdist Comedy with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes
As of now, the film titled “Universal Language” has received all positive feedback, achieving a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Following its successful run at various film festivals, this movie is set to debut in US cinemas on February 12, 2025.
‘Captain America: Brave New World’ – Feb. 14
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but feel the weight of transition as Steve Rogers, our beloved Captain America, hands over the mantle to my longtime friend Sam Wilson, brilliantly portrayed by Anthony Mackie. In his debut film, donning the iconic shield, Sam strives to honor Steve’s legacy while carving out a unique path for himself as one of the world’s most powerful champions.
Anthony Mackie’s First Film as Captain America
In the movie titled “Captain America: A Fresh Start”, the new Captain America is introduced, along with Harrison Ford stepping into the role of Thunderbolt Ross, previously played by William Hurt. The fourth film in this series also welcomes Giancarlo Esposito and brings back Liv Tyler and Tim Blake Nelson, who were first seen in “The Incredible Hulk (2008)”.
‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’ – Feb. 14
Renee Zellweger is making a comeback to the Bridget Jones series, last seen in 2016. The movie “Bridget Jones: Absolutely Smitten” is based on the 2013 novel, and it finds Bridget four years after her husband, Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth), has passed away.
Bridget Jones Returns
In “Mad About the Boy,” two fresh characters enter Bridget’s world: a school teacher portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor and a 29-year-old man, played by Leo Woodhall. Hugh Grant reappears in the series, though he appears only as a figment of Bridget’s imagination. Unlike its predecessors, this new installment will bypass theaters and will instead premiere exclusively on Peacock.
‘The Monkey’ – Feb. 21

An Absurdly Dark Stephen King Adaptation
In the movie, the protagonist chases after long-separated twin siblings who decide to come together to eliminate a toy monkey they suspect is causing another series of gruesome killings. Perkins co-stars with Theo James, Elijah Wood, and Tatiana Maslany in this production.
