As a seasoned gamer and Critical Role enthusiast, I can barely contain my excitement for the upcoming third season of The Legend of Vox Machina! With over seven years of watching these characters grow and evolve through their live-streamed D&D campaign, it’s like welcoming old friends back into our lives.
Time is ticking as we approach the return of The Legend of Vox Machina in Season 3, slated for 2024 on Prime Video. It’s been more than a year and half since the second season left us hanging with a mind-blowing cliffhanger. The upcoming episodes will carry on adapting the tale from Critical Role’s first live-streamed Dungeons & Dragons campaign, and the good news is that you can catch up on the first two seasons for free on Prime Video without needing an Amazon subscription. Recently, the stars shared some insights with TopMob about the modifications they’ve made to the animated series.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that in the lead-up to The Legend of Vox Machina’s third season premiere on October 3, Amazon Prime Video has generously made all 24 episodes from the first two seasons accessible on their official YouTube account!
Regarding anticipating what Season 3 holds beyond the trailer, it’s worth noting that fans who believe they know everything about the next installments in Vox Machina’s journey might be in for some unexpected twists. In a conversation with the cast, all of whom are also executive producers, ahead of the premiere, they discussed the benefits of creating mystery for viewers by deviating from the original campaign. Matt Mercer, the Critical Role Dungeon Master and voice of several Legend of Vox Machina characters, expressed:
Reflecting our commitment to preserving the essence of the initial project while introducing new elements, we aim to convey the authentic vibe of the original series, yet provide opportunities to unveil untold parts of the story that were previously unexplored from the players’ point of view in the original campaign. This unexpected revelation will undoubtedly delight everyone in numerous exciting ways.
In the first two seasons, we’ve seen instances where the story unfolds without the initial group of characters being present, and it seems likely that this trend will persist in Season 3. Mercer added:
Looking back, we could tweak some aspects subtly to enhance the storyline in unexpected ways, delighting those who followed the campaign initially. These alterations would be made with agreement and enthusiasm, primarily focusing on improving the narrative rather than shock value. The result is likely to leave a few viewers quite astonished by the twists and turns. [laughs]
Travis Willingham, known for voicing Grog and collaborating with Sam Riegel on multiple episodes, expressed his unique perspective on the challenge of deviating from the original tale in the Prime Video adaptation. During a conversation with several cast members/producers, he spoke to TopMob about this aspect.
From my perspective as a dedicated fan, it’s our mission to challenge the predictions of our viewers by subverting their expectations and reshaping the narrative in unexpected ways. While we may give hints about future events, we aim to prolong the suspense, keeping them guessing from one episode to the next. If we can successfully create this sense of mystery and anticipation, I believe we’ve truly mastered the art of storytelling in this particular journey.
Regarding the query if they purposely generate tension for viewers who are already familiar with the storyline, Ashley Johnson, known for voicing Pike and previously Ellie in the video games of The Last of Us, instantly agreed, saying “Yes, definitely.” Marisha Ray, voice actor for Keyleth, also weighed in on her thoughts.
There’s a story, even if you know where it is going, [that] you can still have that element of surprise. I think that’s why we as humans love stories and can watch movies or we can watch series several times over and still get that emotional response. That’s on full display, especially here in Season 3.
From the trailer and opening sequence, it appears that the storyline involving Keyleth surviving while the rest of Vox Machina might be significant in Season 3. Furthermore, it seems that the relationship between Keyleth and Vax, as portrayed by Liam O’Brien, is back on track after facing challenges in Season 2. Liam O’Brien, voice actor for Vax’ildan, offered insights into the transition from tabletop game to screen.
I view it as simply a continuation of our usual dinner-time antics when the eight of us gather. We enjoy startling one another, creating unexpected moments during meals, and now we’re extending that fun to a larger audience. Essentially, it’s all about sharing stories.
In a final reflection regarding generating tension for both longtime followers of the initial Critical Role campaign and viewers who only watch the show, Travis Willingham expressed:
We enjoy such narratives, and we’ve noticed both when they shine and when they falter. Since we know precisely who this tale is meant for, we crafted it primarily for ourselves, our supporters, and those who’ve journeyed with us thus far. We believe we’ve honed it quite effectively to suit its intended audience.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but get excited about the third season of “The Legend of Vox Machina,” where I’ll be joining Laura Bailey as Vex’ahlia, Taliesin Jaffe as Percy, and Sam Riegel as Scanlan on an epic journey. This time around, we’re venturing into the depths of hell and battling our way through to defeat the Chroma Conclave of dragons and rescue Exandria!
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice that Percy and Vex seem to be missing from the hell-bound scenes in the latest trailer, while Matt Mercer makes a brief appearance. This might suggest that at least part of our beloved group could be avoiding the fiery pits. However, it remains uncertain whether the party is splitting or not. Regardless, I urge you all to watch the trailer below and speculate on what might happen next in this thrilling saga!
For the third season of “The Legend of Vox Machina,” there will be a total of twelve episodes. Similar to seasons 1 and 2, Amazon Prime Video will make these episodes available in sets of three per week, beginning with the first three on Thursday, October 3rd. Until then, you can catch up on seasons 1 and 2 by streaming them for free on YouTube or through a Prime Video subscription. Additionally, TopMob has some recommendations for top-notch animated TV shows to help expand your viewing choices.
