With The American Psycho Remake In The Works, An Actor From Ryan Murphy's Universe Wants To Play Patrick Bateman

As a gamer with a penchant for horror and a soft spot for well-crafted adaptations, I am thoroughly intrigued by the news that American Psycho is getting another shot at the silver screen, this time under Luca Guadagnino’s direction. The prospect of Cooper Koch, fresh from his turn as Erik Menendez in Monsters, stepping into Christian Bale’s blood-soaked shoes as Patrick Bateman is a tantalizing one.

One of the best horror movies of all time is getting a remake, or rather, one of the best modern horror novels is set for another Hollywood retelling. Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho is set for a brand new adaptation whose existence is already justified due to the director bringing it to life: the Zendaya-starring Challengers and horror-romance Bones and All helmer Luca Guadagnino. Now, an actor from mega-producer Ryan Murphy’s talent stable has voiced an interest in portraying horror’s most stylish slasher Patrick Bateman.

Suitably so, it’s Cooper Koch, known for his role in Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” who has expressed interest in stepping into the same shoes as Christian Bale. This series, a true crime anthology by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, has made Koch a familiar face since its release in mid-September. In an interview with THR, Koch mentioned that he’d like to work on a horror remake next, following his successful portrayal of Erik Menendez.

Luca’s doing American Psycho, so I think I can do Patrick Bateman.

Currently, Cooper Koch hasn’t been officially cast in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming movie. His next two films are scheduled – Daniel Craig’s “Queer” for 2024 and “After the Hunt” starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield in 2025. However, his mention of “American Psycho” amidst recent job offers might be the key to persuade the filmmaker that Koch is suitable for the role.

The performer emphasized that portraying Bateman would represent a significant departure from his previous role as the convicted killer, Erik Menendez. In his own words:

As an enthusiast, I’ve never had the chance to portray a chilling character like a serial killer on screen. However, the opportunities are knocking, conversations are flowing, and the pieces seem to be falling into place. It’s all about waiting, keeping my fingers crossed, and seeing where this journey takes me. Nothing is set in stone yet, but I’m hopeful that it will happen soon!

As a gaming enthusiast, I must share an interesting tidbit: Cooper Koch has openly admitted that his top pick for the best movie of 2024 so far is Challengers. He even went as far as saying he’s “a big fan of gay tennis,” which caught my attention. If Guadagnino responds positively to such genuine praise, that could be a significant step forward. But if Koch starts showing up at premieres in blood-splattered raincoats while cranking Huey Lewis & the News from his boombox, it might just seal the deal!

Currently, Scott Z. Burns is in charge of writing for the upcoming version of “American Psycho”. It’s said that he plans to present a fresh perspective on the Ellis novel’s narrative about a Wall Street professional who unexpectedly starts murdering his greed-driven peers, under investigation by Willem Dafoe’s peculiar detective. However, is this accurate? And whatever became of the cat in the story?

It’s likely that these elements and others will be delved into in the upcoming story, which has been in development nearly 25 years after Mary Harron’s initial film premiered in cinemas. A moderate success initially, the movie has since amassed a large fanbase and is recognized as a timeless psychological horror masterpiece, despite its undeniably ’80s backdrop. Similarly, Monsters featured many scenes reminiscent of period pieces, providing viewers with a glimpse into what Koch might resemble in the role. Picture Erik Mendendez flaunting his business cards, adorned with eggshell and bone-white hues.

It’s likely not surprising that an actor from Ryan Murphy’s extensive roster, many of whom have portrayed killers or villains by now, could include Evan Peters as well. I wonder if there comes a time when Evan reaches his limit for playing disturbed characters, but I hope he takes on such roles again. If he were to play one of Patrick Bateman’s associates instead of Bateman himself, it would still be enjoyable.
