With The Rookie Losing A Series Regular Ahead Of Season 7, What Does That Mean For The Season 6 Finale Cliffhangers?

As a dedicated fan who’s been following The Rookie since its very beginning, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia hearing that Tru Valentino won’t be returning for Season 7. Aaron Thorsen has been a staple on our screens for quite some time now, and his absence will definitely leave a void.

The main cast of “The Rookie” began filming Season 7 several weeks ago, with sneak peeks behind the scenes to confirm this, but one regular actor from Season 6 won’t return when the show resumes. This actor is Tru Valentino, who has portrayed Aaron Thorsen since Season 4 and has been a series regular since Season 5. Although we have some time before “The Rookie” returns to NBC, it’s already intriguing to speculate about how the departure of Aaron might influence the events following the cliffhangers in the Season 6 finale.

According to TVLine, we’ve learned that Tru Valentino won’t be reappearing in Season 7 of The Rookie. Earlier, two fresh characters were added to the cast for the upcoming season – initially slated for 2025 premiere, following a delay from its original spot at the end of the 2024 TV schedule – with Deric Augustine and Patrick Keleher as new officers. At that point, it was unclear if a main character was departing as these newcomers joined the crew.

Since Season 6 concluded with a tense, life-threatening situation for characters Nolan and Bailey, as well as an emotionally charged cliffhanger for Lucy and Tim, viewers might feel anxious about the upcoming changes during the break. The absence of Jenna Dewan in the initial episodes of the new season could potentially complicate the resolution of the Nolan/Bailey cliffhanger unless Dewan and Nathan Fillion had already filmed additional scenes at the end of Season 6.

In a surprising turn of events, Aaron didn’t play a significant role in either of the season-ending cliffhangers from the spring, quite unlike how Season 5 ended with Tru Valentino’s character potentially meeting his end. It might not be overly complex to write Aaron out between seasons, but I would anticipate some repercussions with Celina. Lisseth Chavez is slated to make a comeback for Season 7, and the relationship between Celina and Aaron started getting complicated around their 100th episode.

Currently, there are no known details about how “The Rookie” is planning to bid farewell to Aaron. It might be some time before we have more information due to the show not airing again until mid-2025. Tru Valentino has yet to speak on the matter, and while I’d love for the actor to make a guest appearance in Season 7 for a fitting goodbye, it’s best not to get my expectations too high at this point.

As a fan of The Rookie, I can only cross my fingers and hope for a good explanation behind Nathan Fillion’s departure from the show. It was disappointing to see key characters like Captain Zoe Andersen (played by Mercedes Mason) and Officer Jackson West (Titus Makin) written off in such tragic ways – with Zoe being the first major character to be killed off, and Jackson meeting an untimely end in the Season 4 premiere. Here’s to hoping that Aaron’s absence isn’t due to any more heartbreaking events!

As long as nothing changes, it’s always conceivable that Valentino might make a comeback, either as a guest actor or in a recurring role. Unfortunately, the soonest The Rookie could air again is January after ABC makes their decision to delay Season 7 until midseason 2025. For now, you can catch up on the first six seasons by streaming them with a Hulu subscription.
