As a cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of Disney stars from their early days to their prime, I must say that it’s truly heartening to see Selena Gomez reaching new heights with her Primetime Emmy nomination and Grammy nods. Her journey reminds me of the old saying, “From the Waverly Place to Hollywood’s A-list, she’s been on a magical spell!
This year, Selena Gomez earned her first Primetime Emmy nomination for the series “Only Murders in the Building”. With two Grammy nominations previously under her belt, it’s evident that Gomez is a formidable presence in Hollywood. Her career took off with popular shows like the Disney sitcom “Wizards of Waverly Place“, and recently, Maria Canals-Barrera, who portrayed Gomez’s mother on the show, discussed their relationship during an interview with MovieWeb. This conversation occurred around the release of her movie “Seven Cemeteries”, which also features Danny Trejo. Canals-Barrera also shared insights about working together and the revival of the Disney series, titled “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place“.
Canals-Barrera expressed great admiration for Gomez, stating, “I’m in awe of everything she has endured and come out stronger on the other side.” She continued, “It’s truly remarkable. When I look at her, I still see that little girl. And with [co-star] David Henrie, I can’t help but see that young boy as well. I am incredibly proud of them, extremely proud indeed.
On November 4th, Canals-Barrera also verified her involvement in filming an episode of the Wizards remake. “I was fortunate enough to watch a preliminary screening of the pilot, and it was fantastic,” she shared. “I’m thrilled to be joining the cast of this upcoming sequel, which revolves around David’s character Justin, his family, and his wife and sons. I believe it’s exciting that it’s an entirely new series that explores our family dynamics.
Working with the ‘Icon’ Danny Trejo
Apart from musing about the origins of the popular series “Wizards,” Canals-Barrera also discussed how the Harry Potter craze significantly contributed to the creation of her Disney program. Now, there’s a new project called “Seven Cemeteries,” in which her character Bruja demonstrates her unique brand of witchcraft.
For many years, she’s auditioned for various roles similar to this one, including plays involving traditional Mexican herbal remedies, not necessarily linked to the supernatural, but more so a form of healing rooted in pagan beliefs. She also has experience with the Day of the Dead celebration, a tradition that honors deceased loved ones. Given my background, I’m familiar with such themes related to death and have visited places where discussions about the afterlife are common.
The veteran actress also spoke about her experience co-starring with the iconic Trejo for their new supernatural Western film laced with comedy:
I was delighted when I learned he would be starring in this film, as he is such an intriguing character. There’s a unique contrast to him – on one hand, he has a menacing appearance with large tattoos that fits a stereotype, but on the other, he’s incredibly kind-hearted and genuine. He exudes warmth, grace, authenticity, and humility. I adore this combination of his personality, which is why he has become an icon. He truly excels in his role.
The Seven Cemeteries from Quiver Distribution can now be accessed on-demand and digitally. The much-anticipated premiere of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is set for October 29, 2024.
