As a long-time Toronto resident and avid sports fan, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the arrival of the WNBA’s Toronto Tempo! Growing up here, I’ve always felt a sense of pride for our city, but now we have a team to truly call our own. The name “Tempo” perfectly encapsulates the energy and vibrancy that pulses through the heart of Toronto, and I can already picture the crowds roaring in support of these incredible athletes.
As a thrilled supporter, I can’t contain my excitement as Toronto gets its very own WNBA team! After much anticipation and whispers, the league has finally unveiled the name and emblem of our new franchise, which will take to the court in 2026. Officially, we’ll be known as the Toronto Tempo, the proud representatives of Canada’s vibrant city. Can’t wait to cheer them on!
In a recent statement, team president Teresa Resch explained the significance of the name “Tempo,” stating that it represents pace, speed, and a heartbeat. She further described it as the rhythm one feels when walking the streets of their city and experiencing the energy of fellow Canadians. ESPN reported that more than 10,000 individuals were involved in the public process to choose the team’s name.
The log features and italicized “T” that sits in a basketball-esque circle. Six lines appear to come from the left side into the lettering, which is said to represent five players on the court and the fans. Resch said, “Tempo reflects what fans can expect from this team — including, of course, the in-game experience at the arena. The sounds of the court. The beat of the music. The passion of the fans around you and the intensity of the players on the floor. Capturing all that energy, excitement and feeling was crucial as we chose the name for Canada’s WNBA team.”
In 2025, the Golden State Valkyries will join the WNBA, making Toronto Tempo the league’s fourteenth team. This will mark Canada’s debut in the WNBA. The ownership of the Torono Tempo is held by Kilmer Sports Ventures, a company that also manages the NBA’s Toronto Raptors, NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, and MLS’ Toronto FC.
