As a seasoned movie critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen more than my fair share of horror films from around the globe. Yet, there’s something truly chilling about the Australian outback that Greg McLean has masterfully captured in the Wolf Creek franchise.
It’s been over a decade since John Jarratt last appeared as serial killer Mick Taylor in the Australian outback in “Wolf Creek 2” (2013), but this chilling character is set to make a comeback in 2025 with the upcoming sequel, “Wolf Creek: Legacy“. Originally released in 2005, “Wolf Creek” has since been hailed as one of the greatest Australian horror films ever made, and for pushing the boundaries of the torture porn sub-genre through its compelling character development and breathtaking visuals. Directed by Greg McLean, this critically acclaimed film was even lauded at the time by The Sydney Morning Herald as ““the greatest Aussie flick ever made.”“
“On this occasion, a family of American vacationers stumble unknowingly into Taylor’s hunting territory. When the parents bravely give their lives to shield their children, the kids are left stranded, lost, and pursued in the expansive Australian wilderness. It remains to be seen if these two cunning, resilient young individuals – the ‘Zoomers’ – will prove too difficult for the aging hunter to overpower.”
Why Isn’t Greg McLean Directing Wolf Creek: Legacy?
Given the success of the first two entries in the franchise, one would think that McLean would be eager to return to helm the long-awaited third installment instead of letting someone else take over, but he seems to be busy right now getting ready to shoot his biblical horror film The First Exorcist. As such, he’s confident that Lahiff will do the series justice thanks to his longtime connection to Wolf Creek, saying that sometimes it’s nice to have a “fresh perspective” on things.
“For a long time, I’ve held the conviction that fresh viewpoints can bring great change, and so I am delighted to announce Sean Lahiff as the director for Wolf Creek Legacy. Sean has been an integral part of this universe for quite some time now. This upcoming installment in the Wolf Creek series excites me immensely, as it’s a daring new narrative that remains faithful to the franchise’s origins while venturing into unexplored realms.”
Speaking for himself, Lahiff asserts that “Wolf Creek: Legacy” won’t be your typical slasher movie; instead, it delves into the psychological horror of being pursued. He guarantees that, like the first two films, the vast Australian outback will again play a significant role, serving as another character in the story.
“My goal is to provide the chilling suspense and terror that’s synonymous with the Wolf Creek series and broader horror enthusiasts, while infusing a fresh layer of complexity. We delve into the psychological torment of being pursued, the courage and tenacity of our youthful protagonists, and the eerie, dreamlike quality of the Outback. This tale promises to keep viewers gripped with anticipation, but it will also resonate on a deeper level – striking a chord with the primal dread that classic fairy tales have always evoked.”
The upcoming series titled “Wolf Creek: Legacy” is currently being prepared for production, with filming set to begin in early 2025, followed by a release towards the end of the year. With a few hiccups due to COVID-19 pandemic-related delays, fans are eagerly awaiting its completion. Keep an eye out for updates on this Australian horror production, such as casting announcements, as they become available.
