In keeping with its timeless Universal Monsters tradition, Wolf Man is a movie centered around chilling transformations. This modern adaptation of the 1941 werewolf horror film The Wolf Man (currently streaming on Peacock), directed by Leigh Whannell, offers a compelling, contemporary perspective on the struggle against dark influences.
Without revealing too many details, the movie titled “Wolf Man” centers around the character of Blake (played by Christopher Abbott), a family leader who acquires a curse, possibly after being scratched by a werewolf, as he and his kin make their way to an isolated Oregon farmhouse belonging to his father.
As he undergoes a transformation into an unusual and threatening being, Blake’s family stands in shocking fear… as they come to terms with the possibility that their own safety may hinge on eliminating the man they hold dear.

Wolf Man: Director Leigh Whannell explains real-life tribute in film’s end credits
James Whannell teamed up with his wife Corbett Tuck to pen the script for “Wolf Man.” This creative partnership unfolded amidst the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period when everyone was more mindful of how forces beyond our control can unexpectedly disrupt our sense of balance and joy.
In his conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Whannell expressed that exploring the Wolf Man’s perspective, isolated from his family due to an inability to communicate, offered profound and powerful narrative opportunities – themes of illness and disease tearing families apart. Having personally witnessed such situations with a friend, Corbett and he understood how these diseases can erode a family’s bond. There seems to be no pattern or reason behind who gets affected, as nature cruelly inflicts this trauma upon certain families. Conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or any other afflictions force people to maintain a strong facade, yet the harshness of these circumstances lingers, unsparingly.
The filming of “Wolf Man” resumed last year following the pandemic, but unfortunately, a deeply personal tragedy had occurred for Whannell and Tuck around that time. This incident left emotional scars that were still raw as they began filming in March 2024 in New Zealand.
In late 2023, Chandler Tuck, who was Corbett’s 44-year-old brother, took his own life. Tragically, this happened just a few months before filming for Wolf Man started. This heartbreaking event had a profound impact on both Whannell and Tuck, influencing the movie in ways that remain palpable. As Whannell shared with EW, “It’s like a hand grenade – a loss like that. It leaves so many unanswered questions.
In simpler terms, the last part of “Wolf Man” ties up the movie’s heart-wrenching narrative, exploring both past and future events within the family history to reveal a surprising fact about the film’s ongoing werewolf legacy. Director James Wan mentioned that he felt a strong emotional bond with Chandler, his friend who passed away during film production, throughout the entire process. He believes that this connection helped shape the movie, making it a way for him to cope and grieve in those concluding scenes.
