Monolith Productions, renowned for the popular “Shadow of Mordor” series set in Middle-earth, sparked enthusiasm among fans with news that they’re developing a “Wonder Woman” game for DC.
Jump ahead to this week, and news surfaces that Wonder Woman has been rebooted and discontinued, leading Monolith Studios to shutter its doors. Despite fans’ disappointment over the canceled game, comic book writer Gail Simone penned a heartfelt farewell to the game and the studio as it closes.
A Showpiece Epic
Following the news of the cancellation, Simone shared significant insights about the studio on Twitter, disclosing that “Wonder Woman” was supposed to be the much-anticipated DC game that fans have longed for all along. In her own words:
As a dedicated admirer, I’m chiming in here to share my thoughts on a fascinating discussion about Wonder Woman, a game that truly resonated with its creators. It seemed as though an all-star ‘dream team’ was assembled for this project, meticulously ensuring the game’s elements aligned flawlessly with DC Comics lore.
Despite numerous accusations about the reasons behind its closure, Simone shares that everyone she collaborated with at Monolith and WB always exhibited great excitement towards the game and wholeheartedly backed their efforts.
Simone doesn’t provide the reason for her belief that the game and studio were closed down, but she expresses her well-wishes for the studio’s team members. She writes, “Sometimes, you put in your utmost effort, yet things don’t go as planned… But that team was exceptional, and I can only wish they keep creating outstanding games. Somebody is bound to recognize their talent and set a new benchmark within the industry; I have no doubt about it.
The best that WB said about the cancellation was that it was a ‘tough decision,’ and:
We aimed to deliver an exceptional experience for players and spectators featuring our famous character, but sadly, it no longer aligns with our current strategic plans.
What was Wonder Woman Going to be About?
The “Wonder Woman” video game was initially unveiled about three years back, with much anticipation surrounding it as an AAA title in the action-adventure genre. Take a look!
The official description for the game read:
“She will fight to unite the warriors of two worlds. You are Wonder Woman.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the upcoming single-player open-world action game. This time around, I’ll be stepping into the sandals of none other than Diana of Themyscira! This captivating narrative, set within the DC Universe, promises an original storyline where I’ll join forces with my Amazonian family and the inhabitants of the modern world, aiming to bring unity to both realms.
In addition, it was mentioned that this entity was driven by the Nemesis System, much like the ones used in the “Shadow of Mordor” series of games. This system established a complex tribal structure, allowing players to confront leaders and gain the allegiance of particular factions by overcoming them.

In the film, Wonder Woman, it’s not explicitly stated how the storyline might evolve, but it involves two distinct groups: humans and Amazons. The character Diana finds herself in a position where she must navigate through conflict and strive for unity to bring about peace among these factions.
It’s unfortunate that the series of “Wonder Woman” might come to an end, considering it follows several disappointing DC productions such as “Kill the Justice League.” However, if there is enough enthusiasm, Warner Bros. may have another chance to reconsider this project in the future.
