'Woof Woof' Celebrates the Timeless Bond Between Humans and Dogs

As a lifelong dog lover and a photography enthusiast who has witnessed the profound impact of canines on human lives, I was utterly captivated by the Woof Woof exhibition at Peter Fetterman Gallery. The gallery space became a heartwarming journey through time, tracing the unbreakable bond between humans and their furry companions.

The relationship between humans and dogs spans over tens of thousands of years, making a lasting impact on art and society. From ancient Greek pottery to Aztec statues, dogs have held a subtle yet significant place in art and popular culture, influencing our perception of the world. Currently, this special bond is the focus at Peter Fetterman Gallery, in an aptly named photography exhibition called “Woof Woof“, honoring the enduring friendship between humans and dogs.

This exhibition spans the connection from the early 20th century up to the present day, delicately examining themes of loyalty, love, and life using approximately 30 photographers’ perspectives. On display are Sid Avery’s spontaneous images of Audrey Hepburn and her Yorkshire Terrier, Mr. Famous, as well as Pentti Sammallahti’s tranquil depictions of domestic peace. Other notable pieces include Kristoffer Albrecht’s contemplative Schnauzer by the lake, seemingly deep in thought about a journey, and lively portraits by John Divola that capture his dog in animated movement.

By using a captivating collection of historical and modern photographs, Woof Woof delves deeply into the emotional landscape, encouraging us to look beyond ourselves and cultivate a more empathetic perspective of our common universe. As famed photographer Elliott Erwitt eloquently puts it, “Love seldom reaches the rational parts of our brain. It strikes the imaginative, devoted aspects — we often refer to these as the heart. For millennia, this is where our dogs have dwelled.

The exhibition is now on view at Peter Fetterman Gallery in Santa Monica through March 1, 2025.
