Would Daniel Craig Play Sgt. Rock In James Gunn's DC Universe? Creature Commandos Episode 3 Just Raised Some Questions

As a dedicated fan of DC Comics and a connoisseur of James Gunn’s visionary storytelling, I find myself intrigued by the latest developments surrounding the upcoming Sgt. Rock movie and the ongoing Creature Commandos series. The recent episode “Cheers to the Tin Man” has certainly stirred up some interesting speculations, leaving us fans in a state of suspenseful anticipation.

Warning: SPOILERS for the Creature Commandos episode “Cheers to the Tin Man” are ahead!

In the upcoming DC Universe, spearheaded by James Gunn, there’s a lot to look forward to, including DC movies and TV shows. The animated series Creature Commandos kicked things off a week ago, and just before the first two episodes air, it was reported that Daniel Craig could star in a Sgt. Rock movie directed by Luca Guadagnino. Given this information, one might naturally assume that Craig would play Sgt. Rock. However, the latest episode of Creature Commandos titled “Cheers to the Tin Man” has stirred some confusion on this matter.

The third episode of this series, which requires a Max subscription for viewing, splits its focus between depicting the main team going head-to-head with the Sons of Circe and their sorceress leader, while also delving into the past of G.I. Robot from World War II, leading up to his imprisonment in Belle Reve during the 1990s. In the DC Universe, G.I. was a member of Easy Company, a US Army Infantry unit led by Sgt. Rock. Before encountering Nina Mazursky, Sgt. Rock and the rest of Easy Company were the only companions he forged. Regrettably, due to being deactivated after the war and passing through various hands, including scientist Will Magnus and neo-Nazi Sam Fitzgibbon, G.I. was unable to reconnect with his comrades to fight Nazis again.

In a recent development, Sgt. Rock has officially entered the DC Universe, with Maury Sterling from Smokin’ Aces and Homeland providing his voice. Although this was a brief appearance, it serves to confirm that Sgt. Rock and Easy Company were active during World War II, which could pave the way for the Daniel Craig-led Sgt. Rock movie if it progresses further. However, it seems there are some concerns…

In various statements, James Gunn, who jointly created Creature Commandos and serves as co-president of DC Studios alongside producer Peter Safran, has expressed that actors who lend their voices to animated projects will also portray those characters in live-action adaptations. For instance, the series’ Creature Commandos are headed by Rick Flag Sr., voiced by Frank Grillo, who is set to reprise his role in both Gunn’s Superman reboot and Peacemaker Season 2 as a live-action character. Given that Maury Sterling has given voice to Sgt. Rock in the Creature Commandos series, could it be possible that he will play the character in the movie instead of Daniel Craig, who might instead portray a villain or significant supporting character?

It’s possible that when the Creature Commandos were being produced, the idea for a Sgt. Rock movie hadn’t been conceived yet, which is why Sterling was chosen because he was the most suitable actor for the part. If this is indeed the case, director James Gunn might make an exception and let Craig step into that role. Although it seems Sterling bears a closer resemblance to Sgt. Rock in Creature Commandos, Gunn could disregard this and opt for casting the James Bond veteran instead.

It’s possible I’m dwelling too much on this… yet I might keep mulling it over until the identity of Craig in Sgt. Rock is made clear. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to catch up with Creature Commandos, which airs new episodes every Thursday on Max.
