As a die-hard fan who has spent countless hours poring over Marvel news and theories, I must say that Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The intricate plot twists, unexpected cameos, and R-rated antics have set a new standard for comic book adaptations.
Upon release, Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine swiftly established itself as one of the year’s largest movies, setting high standards for R-rated comic book adaptations and future Marvel films alike. The movie, teeming with cameos, skillfully maintained secrecy around its unanticipated actors, a challenge often faced according to Kevin Feige, though the possible leak of Chris Evans reprising his role as Johnny Storm might have occurred if paparazzi photographers had better timing.
Actor Aaron Stanford, known for his role as Pyro in the X-Men franchise, discussed his return to the character in Deadpool & Wolverine and his experience rejoining a massive mutant production. On the Phase Zero podcast, he shared insights on his character’s early departure and his feelings about being part of such a big-scale film. When asked how Evans managed to avoid appearing in any of the leaked exterior set photos, Stanford explained:
The entire filming took place in the vast, desolate landscape reminiscent of Mad Max’s wasteland, but unfortunately, due to its openness, it proved difficult to keep it under wraps. Consequently, images from the set were leaked, as hordes of paparazzi positioned themselves about a half-mile away, using telephoto lenses to capture the scenes. It seems they are compelled to reveal spoilers, determined as they are to ruin the surprise for everyone.
It seems quite evident that photographers present at the scene should have had ample opportunities to snap a picture of Chris Evans in various costumes. However, unexpectedly, filming this specific scene was far from smooth due to an industry halt in mid-2023. In the words of Stanford, “It wasn’t the most organized production, all things considered.”
It seems Chris wasn’t present on that specific scene because the filming was divided into parts before the Screen Actors Guild strike and after it. On my first day on set, we filmed the initial part of that scene, which happened to be the same day Chris worked. Afterward, due to the duration of the strike, we all took a break from filming. When we returned, we shot the remaining parts of the sequence, but Chris wasn’t there by then because the paparazzi had shown up on that particular day.
It’s akin to going to a major sale and discovering that the main item you’re after is no longer available, but none of the photographers would have known about the prominent Marvel Cinematic Universe actor who was casually strolling around the set months earlier. If they had possession of Cable’s time-travel device from “Deadpool 2”, they could’ve traveled back to the pre-production phase to catch a glimpse of Chris Evans in costume.
Regardless of whether Evans’ involvement was already public knowledge before the movie premiered, it’s hard to predict the plot twists, especially regarding the ending scene and the explicit language in his major outburst. Furthermore, it wouldn’t have spoiled Wesley Snipes’ reprisal as Blade. Nothing could diminish that spectacular return.
Enjoy the ongoing adventure of Deadpool and Wolverine on the big screen while you wait for the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film! Keep coming back to catch all the action.
