Ye Has Fired Steven Smith

Ye Has Fired Steven Smith

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but draw parallels between the ever-evolving world of sneaker design and the dynamic gaming industry. In both realms, creativity and innovation are the lifeblood, driving us forward while shaping cultural trends.

Regardless of whether you recognize Steven Smith personally, you’re likely familiar with his impressive body of work in the sneaker design world. For many years, this renowned designer has been a creative powerhouse within the industry, collaborating with notable brands such as New Balance, adidas, Reebok, FILA, and Nike. He later returned to adidas to contribute to the YEEZY team, where he played a significant role in bringing iconic designs like the YEEZY BOOST 700 and YEEZY FOAM RNNR into existence. However, despite the controversies surrounding Ye, Smith had remained unwavering in his support of this versatile individual. That is, until recently.

As per a recent article in Fast Company, it’s been reported that Smith was let go by Kanye West this month, marking the end of their collaboration spanning eight years. This revelation surfaces approximately two years after Smith assumed the role of head of Donda Industrial Design, a team responsible for launching the YZY Pods priced at $200 USD. However, these same products were later sold for just $20 USD.

Smith expressed his opinion to Fast Company after being dismissed: “It appears that YEEZY is heading downhill, and this is simply one aspect of it. He surrounds himself with questionable individuals who offer little value.” The publication reported a series of conflicts between Smith and Ye from April to August, culminating in Smith’s termination earlier this month and being blocked on Instagram.

While it’s the end of an era, Smith is poised to continue breaking boundaries in the sneaker scene. “I will certainly be a priceless asset to whoever I work with next. It’s all his loss and the result of his foolishness,” Smith concluded in his conversation with Fast Company. Stay tuned for updates as we eagerly await the announcement of where Smith will be heading next.
