As a die-hard Potterhead and a longtime fan of Derek Hough, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and envy when I hear about his Harry Potter experience. Growing up with the Boy Who Lived was like growing up with my own siblings, and knowing that Derek and Julianne were part of that magical world makes me feel like we share an unspoken bond.
In a different context, Derek Hough is most recognized for his stunning dance performances on Dancing with the Stars and World of Dance, but it’s worth mentioning that he and his sister Julianne Hough were once part of one of the most successful movie franchises – Harry Potter. Although their screen time was limited, they contribute to an interesting chapter in the Harry Potter lore. Now, many years later, Derek has given us a delightful flashback by posting a fun clip from their time on set, and what he disclosed about a memento he kept from the set has me completely captivated.
Revisiting the Harry Potter movies has turned out to be an ideal way to mark special occasions, as Derek Hough recently reminded us. Interestingly, the former DWTS contestant once shared that he and his sister were background actors in the first Potter film, and you can catch them in several scenes if you look closely. On Instagram, Hough reminisced about the fantastic childhood experience but what will truly make you envious are the souvenirs he “unintentionally” kept: a prop wand and a Gryffindor scarf!
Fun fact: I shared the screen with [Julianne Hough] in the very first Harry Potter movie! We filmed for three months in the Great Hall, the Forbidden Forest, and even the Quidditch pitch! It was a thrill to be part of such an iconic moment. I might have secretly snatched a Ravenclaw robe, scarf, tie, and some silverware from set… but let’s keep that between us! Just a bit of holiday magic and nostalgia to share with you all. Enjoy your holidays! 🧙
Fans often purchase their own robes and props from different sources, but only a select few have truly obtained authentic costumes straight from the sets of the Wizarding World films. It’s incredibly awesome that former Dancing with the Stars contestants are able to secure these unique pieces. Just imagining having such items in my collection gets me all excited!
In earlier times, the Hough siblings have reminisced about their shared past experiences, which have been noticed by fans over the years. Earlier, Derek expressed that this experience was incredibly cool and walking around the set on his own felt almost as enchanting as the movie itself. Similarly, Julianne talked about her on-screen Potter moment for the film’s 25th anniversary, playfully mentioning that her character enjoyed flirting with the Weasley twins. It is evident that they are proud of this shared experience, and it serves as a fun tribute to DWTS fans everywhere. Here’s a clip of Derek discussing his memories:

This dynamic pair truly took off after Harry Potter; Derek Hough graced our screens with a recurring role on Nashville and starred as Corny Collins in the live Hairspray broadcast. On the other hand, Julianne Hough landed roles in adaptations of Safe Haven and books like Rock of Ages, Burlesque, and Footloose. Yet, it was their exceptional dancing skills that truly shone, earning them numerous accolades on Dancing with the Stars, where they were pros for a long time. This season, it’s been entertaining to see Derek take his place as a judge while Julianne co-hosted alongside Alfonso Ribeiro.
Despite moving on from their roles as Harry Potter backstage performers and achieving success in other areas, it’s always delightful when they look back at those days. Derek’s vintage video serves as a charming revisit to the enchanting world of Harry Potter, stirring excitement among fans by reintroducing familiar faces from behind the scenes or sharing stories about small souvenirs they kept. I genuinely hope that Derek still has those cherished items!
In the classic movie “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” you might spot quick appearances by Derek and Julianne Hough. This film, along with other installments in the series, is now available for streaming with a Max membership. For those who are fond of their dancing skills, you can re-experience their exciting tenure as part of “Dancing with the Stars” family by tuning into the latest season, which is currently streamable with a Hulu subscription.
