As a dedicated fan of “Yellowjackets“, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation as we approach Season 3. The latest portraits for the show have confirmed that Natalie Scatorccio (Juliette Lewis) somehow managed to survive her encounter with phenobarbital, leaving us Nat fans with a glimmer of hope. However, Ashley Lyle’s comments suggest that things might not be as rosy as they seem for our favorite wildcat.
Contains possible spoilers for “Yellowjackets” Season 3
If you ever harbored even the slightest inkling that Natalie Scatorccio (played by Juliette Lewis) miraculously survived her accidental overdose with phenobarbital at the hands of Misty Quigley (Christina Ricci) in the Season 2 finale of “Yellowjackets,” the images released for the show’s third season should put those thoughts to rest. This event, hinted at in Season 1, is now depicted in a photoshoot for “Vanity Fair.” In this sneak peek of Season 3, all the main characters are pictured with their teenage counterparts. However, Sophie Thatcher stands alone, without Juliette Lewis.

According to Sophie Thatcher, who plays Nat in the upcoming series, photos recently released on Paramount’s press site show her appearing thoughtful in various shots. However, Ashley Lyle, co-creator and co-producer of the series, explained to Vanity Fair that these images may carry a deeper, more universal significance for viewers. In other words, there could still be hope for fans of Nat’s character.
As a dedicated fan, I find myself pondering over Lyle’s intriguing words: “Each of us has a version of ourselves that may no longer exist, and we’re left wondering about the circumstances behind their demise – when it happened, why it happened.” Yet, this mystery doesn’t diminish our significance. Instead, it’s as if Natalie’s journey is an extension of our own story. She has a life full of adventures ahead and tales yet untold. The narrative unfolding for Nat suggests there’s more to her than what initially meets the eye, but it seems the writers of this captivating series have even deeper threads in mind.
Can Nat’s younger and older selves merge?
Ashley Lyle stated to Vanity Fair that the show’s storyline for Natalie won’t change because of the death of the adult version; instead, the series has 25 years to explore between its current timeframe and the crash timeline. Moreover, Juliette Lewis hasn’t definitively ruled out a possible return to the show in the future. The image hints at potential developments for Nat’s character. Interestingly, integrating the past and present selves of the “Yellowjacket” team is a primary objective for Season 3, according to Lyle’s conversation with Vanity Fair. She clarified that this blending includes both character-driven aspects and more direct transitions.
Lyle reflected on his past self at age 17 and observed that he hasn’t changed much. “I wonder how one can transform while still remaining the same at their core? How much of us do we conceal, and for how long can we keep it up? This is a theme we’re exploring this season,” Lyle commented.
It seems there are certain aspects about the team that they can’t escape, be it their inherent character traits or past actions during their time in the wilderness. Their identities appear to be somewhat predetermined before the accident, and this incident may strengthen this sense of inevitability. However, only time will confirm if this observation holds true when “Yellowjackets” premieres tentatively in 2025, accompanied by an extra episode that Lyle announced last year.
