As a gamer who has survived countless zombie apocalypses, alien invasions, and magical realms, I can confidently say that nothing quite compares to the suspenseful, gripping, and downright chilling experience that is Yellowjackets. The show’s blend of survival horror and coming-of-age drama is a unique recipe that has hooked me from the very first episode.
Yellowjackets viewers, feast on this: Season three has a return date.
On February 14, 2025, the popular blend of survival horror and coming-of-age drama will make a comeback. Showtime playfully chose Valentine’s Day as the date to announce the return of their Emmy-nominated series about a group of stranded teenagers who are forced to resort to cannibalism in order to stay alive.
The short, chilling, and slightly violent trailer (provided below) hints at the holiday’s peculiar humor by urging viewers to “Feast their eyes in envy.” The third season commences with a double premiere, accessible for Paramount+ and Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers on streaming platforms as well as on-demand. Two days later, it will make its television debut on Showtime, specifically on Sunday, Feb. 16.
Developed by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets narrates a gripping tale through interwoven timelines about a highly skilled high school girls’ soccer team (the Yellowjackets), who tragically survive a plane crash in the untamed wilderness of the far north. The series portrays their transformation from a complex and prosperous team to ruthless factions, all while delving into their attempts to rebuild their lives nearly 25 years later. It underscores that the past has a way of haunting us and what started in the wilderness is far from resolved.
The main cast consists of Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Tawny Cypress, Lauren Ambrose, Simone Kessell, Warren Kole, and Sarah Desjardins. Elijah Wood will reappear in multiple episodes.
In this production, the younger characters are primarily guided by Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Samantha Hanratty, Courtney Eaton, Liv Hewson, Kevin Alves, and Steven Krueger, who portrays the sole adult figure in the past narrative, serving as the Yellowjackets coach.
This season, we’re excited to welcome two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank and Joel McHale as guest stars.
The adult cast list does not include original lead actress Juliette Lewis, as the third season, consisting of ten episodes, will continue following the storyline after the dramatic events of the season two finale. In this finale, Lewis’ character, Nat, met a tragic end when she was inadvertently and fatally overdosed by her friend and fellow survivor Misty (portrayed by Ricci in the current timeline). Furthermore, the present day storyline is not the only one to have left its share of casualties – the wilderness tale from 1996 also claimed several lives (one of which was cannibalized; another was mourned deeply; and a third remains uncertain), installed a new leader as they resorted to cannibalism to stay alive, and left the Yellowjackets team without shelter and in their most vulnerable position yet.
Regarding her emotional farewell from the show, Lewis hinted at the possibility of reappearing in some capacity in the future, but also bid adieu. “I felt they concluded the characters very gracefully,” she shared with The Hollywood Reporter, “and I appreciate good writing, so I was pleased to be involved.” She added, “I’ll miss my cast. They were an exceptional group of actresses, and I adore them immensely. I know they’re destined for great things.
Yellowjackets is overseen by executive producers Lyle, Nickerson, and joint showrunner Jonathan Lisco. Drew Comins from Creative Engine also serves as an executive producer, alongside Jeff W. Byrd, Sarah L. Thompson, Ameni Rozsa, and Brad Van Arragon. This series is manufactured for Showtime by Lionsgate Television and distributed globally by Paramount Global Content Distribution, excluding regions covered by Paramount+.
