As a dedicated fan of the gripping survival drama “Yellowjackets,” I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming third season! The haunting images of the wilderness and the chilling glimpses into the lives of these complex characters have left me on the edge of my seat since the first episode.
The past is coming back to haunt hunt the surviving Yellowjackets once again.
On Saturday, during the CCXP 2024 fan event held in São Paulo, Brazil, a chilling sneak peek trailer for the upcoming season was unveiled, offering tantalizing glimpses of what awaits viewers when the popular coming-of-age survival horror series returns on Valentine’s Day, February 14.
The video begins with a foreboding message that the past will return to haunt, displayed against an individual donning the Yellowjackets team survivors’ notorious cannibalism mask. This ominous introduction, as hinted by creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, along with co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco, suggests that further instances of cannibalism are on the horizon.
Yellowjackets explores two timeframes – past and present, to narrate the story of an exceptional high school girls’ soccer team known as the Yellowjackets, who unfortunately survive a devastating plane crash in a secluded, harsh wilderness region.
Previously, the teaser discovers the survivors stranded in a wilderness, at their most desperate state since the end of season two, with no food or shelter. Sophie Nélisse, portraying young Shauna (adult Shauna is Melanie Lynskey), expresses disbelief, saying “I can’t believe we didn’t eat them first,” as the group bickers among themselves about who should lead.
In the second season of 1996, the wilderness story resulted in multiple casualties (one turned into a communal meal, another led to a harrowing mourning, and the fate of the third one remains uncertain). This ordeal saw the teen characters choosing a new leader as they resorted to cannibalism for survival. Having lost their home and finding themselves in the most vulnerable situation thus far.
In the preview for the contemporary storyline, the characters portrayed by Lynskey, Ricci, Cypress, Ambrose, and Kessell are in danger again due to their past. “Someone wants us dead,” says Lynskey as Shauna. “The only ones who know about this are either us or deceased,” states Ambrose as Van. The teaser also features the return of ghost Jackie, played by Purnell, tormenting present-day Shauna.
In the third season, the group that survived as adults will unite once more, but this time they’ll face their new adversary without one of their original members. Notably absent from the cast list is Juliette Lewis, whose character, adult Natalie (previously portrayed by Sophie Thatcher in flashbacks), met a tragic end during the storyline. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lewis hinted at a possible future return but also bid farewell to the series. She expressed appreciation for how her character was written off, stating, “I thought they wrapped up the characters really beautifully, and I just love good writing, so I was happy to be a part of it.
At the end of the preview, we see the arrival of actress Hilary Swank for the first time. In a frightened manner, she seems to mutter “oh my,” and swiftly flees from something seemingly dreadful.
The third season of Yellowjackets features Warren Kole, Sarah Desjardins, Elijah Wood reprising his character in a recurring fashion, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Courtney Eaton, Liv Hewson, Kevin Alves, and Steven Krueger (portraying the Yellowjackets coach). Additionally, Joel McHale is set to appear as a guest star.
This series follows the transformation of a once complex and prosperous group into brutal factions, even as it explores their efforts to reconstruct their lives more than two decades later. It underscores the idea that the past can never truly be left behind, suggesting that the story that began in the wilderness is still very much ongoing.
The initial images (provided below) further clarify aspects of season three. They depict the teenagers struggling to survive and, in the principal image at the top of this article, suggest a possible funeral for Nat, as seen in the present-day cast.
The television series “Yellowjackets” is overseen by Lyle, Nickerson, and Lisco as executive producers. Drew Comins from Creative Engine serves as an executive producer alongside Jeff W. Byrd, Sarah L. Thompson, Ameni Rozsa, and Brad Van Arragon. This series is created for Showtime by Lionsgate Television and distributed globally (excluding markets of Paramount+) by Paramount Global Content Distribution.
Starting from Valentine’s Day, the third season will be available with two episodes ready to stream and watch on demand for both Paramount+ and Paramount+ With Showtime subscribers. These episodes will air before their linear Showtime broadcast, which will happen on Sunday, February 16, two days later.
