Yellowjackets Season 3 Revives Unsolved Mystery from Last Season

Minor spoilers ahead for the two-episode premiere of Yellowjackets Season 3.

Currently, it’s an exciting period for Yellowjackets fans, as their favorite dark comedy-mystery series (now available on Paramount+ with a Showtime subscription) has made a comeback for its third season. In the two premiere episodes, we catch up with the title team in both timelines and are presented with even more captivating narratives. The premiere also hinted at an unresolved mystery from Season 2 that I’m eager to learn about: whatever happened to Crystal?

In the third season of “Yellowjackets,” the survivors, now well into spring and experiencing more food abundance, find themselves in various situations. As some viewers prepare to watch the new season, I’m finding myself captivated by certain dialogue exchanges. Particularly, in the second episode, Misty hints at the enigmatic disappearance of Crystal while searching for Mari with Natalie, who is also known as the Antler Queen. Given this interaction, it seems likely that we’ll uncover what became of her. Could she have miraculously survived her fall? Or was the entire incident a product of Misty’s hunger-induced delusion? Is it possible that she’s secretly hanging out with Coach in his hidden refuge instead?

I’m not sure about the outcome, but the fact that Crystal’s name was brought up gives me a glimmer of hope that we might find out what happened to her at last. Her apparent demise initially ruled out the possibility of identifying Pit Girl. However, if she somehow managed to survive the winter, there’s a chance she could still be in the picture.

During their discussion about the numerous vanishings among the Yellowjackets since they got stranded in the forest, Misty mentioned her companion Crystal. Although it appeared that Misty had pushed her friend off a cliff to her death, Crystal’s body didn’t suddenly disappear without a trace. It’s plausible that an animal dragged her body away, but no one can say for certain.

In a meticulous manner, the series “Yellowjackets” is portraying a young girl in the forest as the storyline spirals into cannibalistic turmoil. Concurrently, it maintains some age-old enigmas unsolved, such as the true identities of Pit Girl, The Man with No Eyes, and the exact number of survivors among the girls who initially escaped. As for Season 3, it persists in emphasizing the supernatural aspects of the show, with the characters consistently hearing a puzzling, resonating sound emanating from the woods.

The opening episodes of Season 3 have been gripping, with the narratives in both timeframes keeping viewers hooked. The survivors of the plane crash are sticking to their communal faith, which encompasses having a queen and regarding the wilderness as a divine entity. Furthermore, the mounting friction between Shauna and Mari, coupled with Mari’s abduction by Coach Ben, creates an atmosphere where conflict seems imminent at any moment.

Every Sunday, you can catch new installments of “Yellowjackets” on Showtime, and they’re only available to stream on Paramount+. With its Season 3 debut being one of the most eagerly awaited premieres in the 2025 TV schedule, there’s a lot of anticipation about how events will unfold.
