In a surprising twist, Episode 6 of Yellowjackets saw the arrival of three new characters deep in the wilderness. This development could significantly shape the storyline moving forward, as we now see that the women are not isolated but have essentially reverted to a feral state. The actions they took against Ben (Steven Krueger) suggest there may be no redemption for them, which explains their ongoing trauma and secrecy in the present day, 25 years later.
In the final episode, a trio that initially seemed enigmatic turns out to consist of two academics from a university and their tour guide. This revelation sheds light on several crucial aspects of the storyline, many of which have been unanswered since the series began.
Who Is the Trio in ‘Yellowjackets’?
In this scenario, Edwin (played by Nelson Franklin) and Hannah are two researchers at a university who specialize in studying frog mating behaviors. Accompanying them is Kodi (Joel McHale), their guide. For six months, they plan to delve into the wilderness for their project, gathering data and capturing footage using their cameras. Unfortunately, Edwin meets an untimely end at the hands of Lottie (Courtney Eaton) after stumbling upon Ben’s decapitated head near a fire. The remaining group is then pursued relentlessly until Hannah is captured. Before venturing to investigate strange noises heard from the women, they had mistakenly broken their satellite phone at their base camp.
It’s currently uncertain where Kodi is located, and it seems ambiguous about the intentions of the women regarding Hannah. Yet, prior to Hannah being taken captive, she records a heartfelt message for her daughter using her camera, expressing her love for her child. Regrettably, Hannah fears that she won’t survive the wilderness, and her prediction may prove accurate.
Currently residing at home, Callie (Sarah Desjardins) hands Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) the mysterious tape found on their doorstep. Shauna enlists Van (Lauren Ambrose) for assistance in locating a device to play the recording. The chilling scream heard on the tape is Hannah’s, echoing the moment Edwin was killed by Lottie. It also contains a message meant for Shauna’s daughter. Van points out that only they and the deceased are aware of this situation. This unusual trio provides insight into future events while also generating intrigue about other aspects.
This Might Be How the Girls in ‘Yellowjackets’ Get Home
Despite the satellite phone being damaged, the university plans to dispatch a rescue team for Hannah, Edwin, and Kodi within six months. Consequently, it seems the ones rescuing these ladies are the members of this rescue team. Hannah might share this timeline with them, and they will understand that while someone might arrive earlier, they are almost certainly due home in half a year.
This new development could shift the relationships among the women as they confront the terrible actions they’ve committed. There is now a definite end to their suffering, allowing them to see a path towards healing. Lottie might interpret this as the sign’s prophecy about Ben being their guide home – recalling that it was their feast on his body that led this group together. It’s also plausible that Hannah had to report back to school at regular intervals, and they chose to visit earlier when they didn’t receive communication from her.
Hannah Could Be Pit Girl in ‘Yellowjackets’
One of the remaining enigmas for the show ‘Yellowjackets’ yet to unravel is the true identity of the “Pit Girl.” Previously, it was generally accepted that Mari, portrayed by Alexa Barajas, could be the Pit Girl due to her long brown hair and being one of the few women left whose fate hasn’t been definitively confirmed as alive. However, recent developments suggest a stronger possibility that Hannah might instead be the Pit Girl.
It’s logical to assume that Hannah, spotted running outside in winter wearing just a small white dress, would typically be dressed warmly, especially if she were part of a ritual like the Queen of Hearts card pull to decide who’d be the next sacrifice. Instead, it seems more plausible that Hannah was held captive and managed to escape, triggering the chase by the women. Before they could catch her, Hannah fell into the pit Ben discovered earlier, which interestingly, may have been dug by the university’s prior team as Hannah hinted in the episode.
The Sounds Might Not Be Mystical
As they progress through the series, these women often hear mysterious noises they attribute to spirits or talking trees. Lottie finds it perplexing that it’s just the wilderness communicating with them. However, when Hannah and Edwin are recording the frogs they’re studying, it appears this sharp sound is actually part of their mating call.
Despite just one piece of the mystery about the strange occurrences in the wilderness, might it hint that these events are merely figments of Lottie’s imagination, possibly misconstrued by Tai (Jasmin Savoy Brown) due to her existing psychological instability? It was evident from the start that Tai harbored a dark side, as she deliberately hurt another player before the flight to secure her position on the team. Among Lottie and Tai, who have experienced out-of-body phenomena more frequently than others like Travis (Kevin Alves) and Akilah (Nia Sondaya), who have only encountered such events under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms or toxic fumes, there could be a deeper explanation to this theory.
Hilary Swank’s Character Is Likely Hannah’s Daughter
The discovery of Hannah’s tape, its message intended for her daughter, and the fact that this tape reached Shauna strongly suggests that the tape is indeed from Hannah’s daughter. It appears that Hilary Swank plays this character, although her exact role remains unspecified. Upon hearing the tape, it seems reasonable to assume that Hannah’s daughter would recognize the horrific events that occurred in the wilderness and understand that the women were responsible. Despite a lapse of 25 years, Shauna managed to find out more about Hannah by digging into local records. It turns out that Hannah had a teenage pregnancy which she gave up for adoption, suggesting that her daughter may not have known who her biological mother was until now.
Has she been the one mocking Shauna all along, or could it be she was the one responsible for Lottie’s death? The most intriguing mystery that arises from this scenario is: Who secretly transported the tape from the wilderness and managed to pass it on to Hannah’s daughter 25 years later?
Callie Is Starting to Figure Things Out
Frustrated by not receiving the answers she desires, and sensing that her mother harbors hidden truths from her past wilderness experience, Callie (Sarah Desjardins) is making every effort to uncover more information. She secretly places her phone in her mother’s handbag before Shauna departs to meet Van (Lauren Ambrose) and Tai (Tawny Cypress). The phone is set to record their conversation, which Callie intends to review later. However, Shauna discovers the phone and angrily erases the recording without realizing that it can still be found in her “Recently Deleted” folder by Callie.
After listening, it becomes apparent that Callie starts looking up unsolved cases of missing persons from Canada during the 1990s on her computer. She informs her father, Jeff (Warren Kole), about the details she found concerning two university researchers and their guide who disappeared around the same time her mother was stuck in Canada. This discovery could potentially prompt Callie to seek answers, leaving Shauna with no other option but to clarify the situation for her daughter.
If Lottie (Simone Kessell) was correct in giving Callie the necklace and feeling that the wilderness selected her, it might stir a comparable darkness within Callie. As the season progresses, her significance appears to expand. However, where she’s headed is still uncertain.
Currently, out of the three newcomers, one has perished, another is in custody, and the remaining one is presumed to be somewhere in the wilderness eluding capture. Given their circumstances, it’s probable that they will meet a similar fate. Yet, due to Kodi’s exceptional survival skills, there’s a chance he managed to conceal himself, even when rescue teams arrived, and endured until he found an escape route. He might have been living incognito under a different identity before resurfacing now. While it seems improbable, this series often pushes the boundaries of possibility.
