‘Yellowstone’ Cast Says Scripts Were Redacted to Protect First Episodes Without Kevin Costner

As a seasoned gamer of life, I’ve seen my fair share of cliffhangers and plot twists – but none quite like the one Yellowstone has served us with its fifth season return. The fact that even the cast doesn’t know how it all plays out is a testament to Taylor Sheridan’s masterful storytelling.

The upcoming fifth season of Yellowstone is shrouded in mystery to such an extent that not even the cast members themselves know how the story will unfold. On a recent Friday, the show’s main actors disclosed that the second half of the season featured blacked-out scripts, meaning they would only learn their own lines during filming, resulting in genuine and spontaneous reactions as they shot scenes for the series’ return currently underway in Montana and set to air later this fall.

This season’s been a real mystery,” I find myself musing as I reflect on my role as Monica Dutton, in a tantalizing sneak peek video shared by Paramount Network last Friday (check it out below). The Dutton family, portrayed by the talented cast members including Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Luke Grimes, and Cole Hauser, open up about our characters’ journeys.

The principal actors of the most popular TV show have largely remained quiet in the run-up to the upcoming episodes for the main series, which is now known as Taylor Sheridan’s expansive Yellowstone universe. The season 5B episodes will debut on Nov. 10 at 8 p.m., with a repeat showing two hours later on CBS, as announced this week. This highly anticipated TV series will air on Paramount Network.

Jen Landon, portraying Dutton ranch hand Teeter, shared insights on the security measures implemented during the latter part of the fifth season. She detailed how the actors were provided with “sanitized” or “edited” script versions to maintain secrecy about the plot developments.

“Basically everything is blacked out except for your lines,” she said.

Dawn Olivieri, acting as Sarah Atwood – the love interest of Jamie Dutton in Bentley’s series, expressed, “Neither of us knows our past actions, and we’re not allowed to share them with one another.

As a devoted viewer, I’ve come to appreciate the unique twists and turns that our favorite show often takes. Yet, even after seven exhilarating seasons, I find myself facing something fresh – a new set of challenges. However, these aren’t just changes for the sake of change; they are strategic moves aimed at safeguarding the storyline “to ensure the best experience for us, the audience.

The distinctive method prompted genuine, spontaneous responses from the performers, as Denim Richards (the character portraying ranch hand Colby) put it, “were not pre-planned or rehearsed.

The creative team has discussed an abundance of unexpected elements for viewers, given the intense scrutiny now focused on Yellowstone, which is comparable to a spotlight. They also mentioned that the cast is performing exceptionally well. Voros commented, “I have been touched more by the actors’ performances than I ever have before, and that’s significant.” Fresh, emotionally charged scenes are shown of Reilly as Beth Dutton, Grimes as Casey Dutton, Bentley as Jaime Dutton, and Hauser as Rip Wheeler.

Grimes became emotional and expressed that he believes many will deeply appreciate it, saying, ‘It’s touched my heart, and I truly think they’ll adore it.’

When fans tune in to see how the show “Yellowstone” will be affected by Kevin Costner‘s departure following the intense John Dutton-centric events of the midseason finale, which aired back in January 2023 (prior to the Costner-Sheridan disputes and double Hollywood strikes of 2023 causing delays), the exact number of episodes left to be determined has not been confirmed.

Discussions are underway for Reilly and Hauser, known for their roles as Beth and Rip, to potentially return to the cast for a potential sixth season of Yellowstone, following the announcement that season 5B would serve as the final chapter.

A potential next step might deviate from the style of the Yellowstone sequel series, The Madison, which features Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Fox. This series, part of several spin-offs within the same universe, is characterized as a profound exploration of grief and human relationships centered around a family living in the Madison River valley of central Montana.

Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, who manage the largest uninterrupted cattle ranch in the U.S. As they navigate shifting relationships, unsolved mysteries, old hurts, and earned esteem, their ranch is perpetually at odds with its neighboring entities – an expanding town, a Native American reservation, and America’s first national park.

Under the collaboration of MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, the critically acclaimed show Yellowstone was jointly created by executive producers Taylor Sheridan (renowned for his works in Wind River, Hell or High Water and Sicario) and John Linson. Kevin Costner also serves as an executive producer, alongside Art Linson, David C. Glasser, Bob Yari, Stephen Kay, Michael Friedman, Voros, and Keith Cox. The series is distributed globally by Paramount Global Content Distribution.
