As a movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that I’ve seen quite a few shocking twists and turns in my time, but none have left me as stunned as the demise of John Dutton in Yellowstone. Having witnessed the rise and fall of countless characters, I can confidently state that the audience reaction to this event was not only predictable but also understandable.
Heads-up: This article reveals spoilers from Yellowstone Season 5
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Voros, who directed several Yellowstone episodes including “Desire Is All You Need,” where John dies, found the audience’s reaction to be unexpected because it was already public knowledge that Costner would not rejoin the series.
It’s surprising to see so many people expressing disappointment over John Dutton’s death on Twitter, even though they were aware that Kevin had stated he wouldn’t be returning to the show.
Christina Voros added:
I find myself pondering an intriguing parallel between reality and fiction. Despite the evidence, it seems people don’t want this tragic event to be true. In a peculiar twist of life mirroring art, the outrage over John’s demise is palpable – just as it should be in the storyline. The characters themselves are outraged by his death, and so, in an odd sense, it’s the crux of the narrative. It seems we’re not meant to accept or be at peace with this turn of events.
Luke Grimes Defends John Dutton’s Shocking Death
During a conversation with PEOPLE, actress Grimes (who plays Kayce Dutton, John’s youngest son in the show) emphasized that John’s surprising passing underscores the unpredictable aspect of death, evoking genuine feelings.
Life can be unexpected, isn’t it? Sometimes, the loss of people doesn’t follow our expectations or timeline. That’s just the nature of life.
In my perspective, there have been some unfavorable responses, and I believe they may feel a sense of disappointment or letdown. Interestingly enough, John’s departure from the series was something we had planned all along, and it seems like viewers got to see more of his character than we initially intended.
“In my opinion, it was fortunate that Kevin stayed on the show for as long as he did because his departure allowed the storyline to intensify significantly.
After the airing of “Desire Is All You Need,” which is Part 2 of the ongoing fifth season of the show, Costner stated he hadn’t watched the episode yet and learning that his character had supposedly committed suicide didn’t make him eager to watch it. Costner also suggested that John’s death might be a deceitful clue, and it appears now that John’s demise was not actually a suicide as initially portrayed. Notably, Costner left Yellowstone due to scheduling conflicts with his other project, the Western series Horizon: An American Saga; the first installment of this series is available for streaming on Max.
On Sundays at 8 PM Eastern and Pacific Time, you can catch Taylor Sheridan’s show “Yellowstone” on the Paramount Network. The series finale is scheduled for December 15, 2024.
