As a dedicated fan of both Westerns and historical accuracy, I must say that 1883 has truly stolen my heart. Coming from someone who’s spent more hours than I care to admit watching old western movies and documentaries, this series hits all the right notes for me.

Since its premiere on June 20, 2018, Taylor Sheridan’s series “Yellowstone” has been a hot topic in media and entertainment discussions. Featuring captivating storytelling, stunning visuals, and an excellent ensemble cast including Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, and Wes Bentley, it’s no wonder that the show has left critics and viewers equally intrigued. The narrative revolves around John Dutton, a family patriarch who employs dramatic and frequently violent measures to protect his ranch from those intent on its destruction. As a result, the Dutton family is constantly battling external threats as well as internal conflicts, all in an effort to preserve their power.

Although Yellowstone has achieved tremendous success, it doesn’t hold the crown as the best work from the Sheridan franchise. That honor goes to one of the series’ offshoots, specifically the prequel series, 1883. This show premiered on Paramount+ all the way back on December 19, 2021, and quickly found favor with its existing fanbase. The story unfolds around an earlier generation of the Dutton family, who set off from Tennessee post-Civil War. They travel westward, first to Texas, then joining a wagon train bound for Oregon, before finally settling in Montana to establish the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, which serves as the foundation for the original Yellowstone series.

This decision results in a more detailed plot that captivates audiences and concentrates on the primary conflict experienced by the Dutton family: their challenging journey across the Western frontier.

1883 has been lauded for its gripping portrayal of the perilous journey undertaken by the Dutton family, with death lurking menacingly at every turn. Each installment serves to inexorably draw the primary cast towards their fate, maintaining a tension that keeps viewers captivated. The series’ rapid-fire narrative pace is one aspect that Yellowstone sometimes seems to lack, as it occasionally appears to stray from its main storyline with numerous characters and subplots.

With an impressive $175 million budget for the show 1883, the production team was successful in acquiring genuine Western frontier settings for filming. The series offers a captivating journey through various landscapes, from towering mountains to expansive plains. Beyond the natural scenery, the wagons and towns depicted are equally authentic, accurately reflecting the era in which the story unfolds. The visuals of 1883 are nothing short of breathtaking, solidifying its position as a refreshing addition to the Western genre, a classification that Yellowstone occasionally finds challenging.

The Powerful Women of ‘1883’

While Yellowstone certainly boasts notable female characters like Beth Dutton, 1883 sets a bar that’s tough to match. The series devotes significant attention to Elsa Dutton (played by Isabel May), who is both impulsive and courageous, yearning for the perilous western voyage. Unlike Beth, who may alienate viewers due to her harsh demeanor, Elsa captivates them with her allure and her knack for romanticizing her journey.

Apart from Elsa, her mother, Margaret Dutton (played by Faith Hill), is also part of the series. She’s a remarkable woman who shows immense love and support. She stands strong with her husband, defending their children against numerous dangers they encounter. In many instances, she and Elsa captivate the audience more effectively than Beth from Yellowstone often does.

The Historical Accuracy of ‘1883’

1883’s authentic Western atmosphere is primarily achieved through its set design, costumes, and other relevant aspects. Moreover, the incorporation of real-life historical figures from that era within the storyline adds an extra layer of authenticity to the series. The characters portrayed by these talented actors further enhance the show’s genuine feel, as they bring a unique level of star power to their roles.

1883 presents historical figures General George Meade (portrayed by Tom Hanks), Charles Goodnight (Taylor Sheridan), and Marshal Jim Courtright (Billy Bob Thornton) in the series. General Meade, famously known for his victory over Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg, Goodnight who played a significant role in establishing a trail to Colorado following the Texas Panhandle settlement, and Courtright, a notorious gunman residing in Fort Worth, Texas, are all real-life characters. The show takes pride in maintaining this authenticity, setting it apart from other series like Yellowstone, which never took this unique approach.
