As a dedicated fan who’s been following Yellowstone since its debut, I can attest to the rollercoaster of emotions that comes with each new season. But nothing quite prepared me for the secrecy surrounding the filming of Season 5! It was like being on the set of a Marvel movie, only instead of superheroes, we had Duttons and Bechtels.
In an astonishing turn of events, the making of the last episodes for Yellowstone’s fifth season was shrouded in Marvel-like confidentiality. Can you believe it? The actors themselves were kept in the dark about the unfolding plotlines scheduled to air on television in 2024. With this opportunity, I grilled Kathryn Kelly, who embodies Emily, Jimmy’s partner and vet tech, on the unique difficulties she faced due to these secrets.
When I discussed the controversial redacted scripts from Yellowstone with Kelly, she shared an anecdote about obtaining them. Apparently, she prefers physical copies of scripts, which is exactly what she received. However, numerous sections on those pages were heavily censored or blacked out, as she described.
Originally, I’m given the task of arranging and these documents are subsequently produced in print. It resembled a three-page blackout, reminiscent of classified or redacted material. My initial response was, ‘What on earth am I supposed to do with this? It’s providing me with nothing! Is this some sort of joke?’
It’s not just her; many members of the Yellowstone cast received censored scripts, with the exception being some main characters such as Luke Grimes, the actor portraying Kayce Dutton, who revealed to Esquire that he received all the information.
Kelly explained that she recognized the need for secrecy, but also felt that more could have been done to prevent leaks from happening, emphasizing their desire for “job stability.” However, in the end, everyone came to understand why Taylor Sheridan’s scripts were being tightly guarded, given that significant plot twists like John Dutton’s demise were at stake, as no one wanted to accidentally spoil a major storyline.
It wasn’t easy for them because they were unaware of events happening beyond their immediate situations, as Kelly pointed out. Since Emily doesn’t show up until the second last episode, it’s likely that she was not aware of the circumstances leading to the auction that Jimmy and she attended in Episode 13 at Yellowstone.
Nevertheless, she clarified that occasional conversation would occur to help construct the narrative, but essentially, they should rely on the flow of events.
I believe there was a slight sense of disconnection, as it seemed that not everyone involved fully grasped the storyline we were telling, including costumers, hairstylists, and makeup artists. Since we didn’t know all the character arcs, it sometimes felt fragmented or disjointed.
She initially found it challenging and somewhat fragmented, but ultimately understood that she needed to rely on the progression of events, Taylor Sheridan’s scriptwriting, and her rapport with the cast. In the end, everything fell into place as expected, albeit in an unconventional manner that they weren’t accustomed to, eventually culminating in a harmonious outcome.
Given our shared chemistry built over years, our collective trust in Taylor’s writing abilities, and his understanding of everyone’s needs, it feels as if the production remains seamless. However, the change in receiving only parts of each script instead of the whole has left me questioning what’s next while watching.
She hadn’t realized what was unfolding until she joined her fellow actors at the Season 5B premiere and took their seats to watch it together. But being caught off guard along with her friends and peers turned out to be a fantastic experience. I can easily imagine them all holding their breath in unison as John’s destiny was unveiled, and I would have enjoyed eavesdropping on their discussions about potential future events.
Currently, with the last episode of Yellowstone fast approaching, the actress who plays Emily finds herself tuning in along with the rest of the audience, expressing that she does so just like everyone else.
As a gamer, I must admit, I’m really digging this experience so far. It’s awesome in ways I didn’t anticipate. Usually, I’m the one who knows the storyline, but here, I find myself asking, ‘What’s the next twist?’ It’s quite intriguing, keeping me on my toes!
Me neither, when I was gearing up for the Yellowstone interviews at the beginning of the season, I wasn’t permitted to watch the premiere before it went live on Paramount Network. This left me speculating quite a bit, even to the point where I thought Kevin Costner might make a comeback. Not knowing exactly what lies ahead can be tricky, but it’s also thrilling to imagine potential outcomes and ponder all the theories swirling around.
Currently, certain actors from the Yellowstone series have the privilege of living that experience, albeit it posed challenges during filming as it kept all the show’s secrets under wraps until their episodes premiered on the Paramount Network every Sunday at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.
