Yo Yo Honey Singh in legal trouble over Maniac; actress Neetu Chandra moves Patna High Court alleging ‘vulgarity’ in song

In a move brought before the Patna High Court, actress Neetu Chandra has submitted a public interest lawsuit (PIL) against popular singer and rapper Honey Singh. The allegation is that his recent song “Maniac,” featuring Esha Gupta, contains explicit content and degrades women, as reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

Additionally mentioned by the Public Interest Litigation are contributors to the song’s production, such as lyricist Leo Grewal, as well as Bhojpuri singers Ragini Vishwakarma and Arjun Ajanabi. The hearing is tentatively scheduled for this month’s end.

Neetu Chandra, recognized for her roles in Bollywood, Bhojpuri, and Maithili cinema, has asked Yo Yo Honey Singh to rewrite the words of his song due to worries about its explicit sexualization and portrayal of women as merely items.

Actress from the movie Garam Masala criticized the song for employing Bhojpuri dialect, arguing that it perpetuates obscenity and undermines women’s empowerment.

During an interview with India TV, Chandra voiced her worries, explaining that inappropriate songs sung in Bhojpuri and Hindi are causing distress among girls and women in Bihar. This discomfort arises when they travel to school or college, compelling them to walk with their gaze downcast.

She noted that these types of songs have created an obstacle for women to comfortably watch TV at home. Furthermore, Chandra mentioned that while some artists who produce such content have garnered popularity, she believes this could potentially slow down societal and national development.

The actress additionally questioned the reason behind the explicit lyrics being exclusively in Bhojpuri instead of Punjabi, which is also part of the song and Honey Singh’s native language.

Chandra commented, “What was the need for those sentences to be in Bhojpuri? It’s because we people from Bihar are often quiet and don’t voice our objections. They seem to treat our language with disregard, as if it lacks respect.

When questioned about if songs by Bhojpuri artists similarly influenced female safety, the actress acknowledged her unfamiliarity with those songs yet emphasized that the context in which such songs are popularized is creating a hazardous atmosphere for women.

As a devoted admirer, I’ve often found myself embroiled in discussions about the contentious lyrical choices of Yo Yo Honey Singh. His work has been a recurring topic in debates concerning misogyny in music, and this recent legal dispute might just reignite these long-standing conversations yet again.
