You Can Enjoy Turn-Based Games Without Hating Action RPGs

It seems that turn-based games, particularly Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, have gained popularity once more. Interestingly, instead of praising this game’s artistic qualities, some enthusiasts are opting to criticize action RPGs and the latest iterations of Final Fantasy. This is rather disappointing, given that the developers themselves are avid fans of Final Fantasy.

It’s quite bewildering why there’s so much animosity towards other games, especially since fans can appreciate both turn-based RPGs and action RPGs. Ideally, fans should be able to enjoy every game without pitting them against one another in some sort of competition.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an outstanding role-playing game that features turn-based battles but retains numerous real-time aspects as well. Players can fire their weapons and aim at will, similar to third-person shooter games such as Resident Evil. Additionally, the game incorporates defensive actions akin to real-time dodges, reminiscent of Nintendo’s Mario RPG series.

In addition to this, the very same enthusiasts who appreciate Expedition 33 don’t discuss other strategy-based games they prefer. They might mention Persona, XCOM, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and more, but what they consistently ask for is another strategy-style Final Fantasy game. It’s somewhat disappointing, considering they have the option to switch to other games with similar combat mechanics.

Other enthusiasts have shown more passion in promoting turn-based games such as the overlooked gem on Xbox 360, Lost Odyssey. A quick browse through various platforms shows fans are once again praising Lost Odyssey, which is always exciting news. While some fans express their fondness for Lost Odyssey and other RPGs of its kind, that’s a separate matter altogether.

It’s exciting to observe a resurgence in appreciation for genres that were previously overlooked, but let’s not undervalue action RPGs. There are numerous fantastic titles such as Ys X and the Kingdom Hearts series, which continue to provide an enjoyable gaming experience. Even the debated Final Fantasy 7 Remake games can be entertaining, becoming more appealing once fans adapt to Square Enix’s unique narrative approach.

Enthusiasts might find themselves deeply engaged in strategy-based games such as Clair Obscur or classic Final Fantasy installments. Conversely, they may not be fond of action Role-Playing Games (RPGs) if the genre doesn’t resonate with them. It seems to me that expressing disdain for a series to highlight your preference for another can be counterintuitive. However, it’s perfectly fine to have differing opinions about games. Just remember not to let negativity define your identity when discussing them.

Indeed, given my fondness for turn-based games, it’d be fantastic if classics like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon were re-released in a modern format. Until such an occasion, I’ll indulge myself by playing numerous action and turn-based RPGs to satisfy my gaming appetite.
