A significant number of Max subscribers can’t get enough of Shinichiro Watanabe’s latest anime creation, “Lazarus,” which debuted in the Spring 2025 season. With eight episodes out now and five more to follow, this show consistently tops Max’s weekly streaming rankings. Given its unique fusion of gentle sci-fi elements with the action-packed style of the John Wick series and the stunning animation by MAPPA (Jujutsu Kaisen and Hell’s Paradise), it’s no wonder that Lazarus keeps climbing the streaming charts each week.
As of its release, the show “Lazarus” is ranked 10th among the most-watched shows on Max this week. Notably, an anime has penetrated the top 10 list, and remarkably, “Lazarus” has held its ground against HBO/Max’s biggest new releases such as “The Last of Us,” “Rick & Morty” Season 8, “George & Mandy’s First Marriage,” and the final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Critics have highly praised “Lazarus,” giving it a score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans who are familiar with Watanabe’s previous works, including “Bebop,” “Samurai Champloo,” and “Terror in Resonance,” were already eager for the unique and energetic journey that “Lazarus” would offer. However, it appears that even casual viewers are getting drawn into the show now that it has entered Max’s Top 10.
The story “Lazarus” unfolds in the not-too-distant future when Dr. Skinner invented an extraordinary painkiller called Hapna and made it widely available at a lower cost than other medications. For three peaceful years, the world enjoyed this miracle drug until Dr. Skinner reappeared under mysterious circumstances, disclosing that anyone who had taken even a single dose of Hapna would perish exactly three years later. With only one month remaining before the first victims start to pass away, a band of misfits, known as Lazarus, embark on a desperate quest to locate Dr. Skinner and save mankind, if not themselves.
‘Lazarus’ Features Kick-Ass Action and A Killer Soundtrack
Listening to a Shinichiro Watanabe anime guarantees two things: the music will be exceptional, and there will be thrilling action (except for Kids on the Slope). Similarly, Lazarus doesn’t deviate from this pattern. Kamasi Washington has crafted an electronic soundtrack that merges the jazz influences from Cowboy Bebop and the hip-hop vibe of Samurai Champloo, resulting in a fresh, yet tribute-worthy blend reminiscent of Watanabe’s most iconic works.
The action in the series “Lazarus” is simply outstanding, meticulously crafted by Chad Stahelski, director of the “John Wick” films. He personally filmed all the fight sequences to serve as a guide for MAPPA’s animators. This dedication shines through in the final product, making the action in “Lazarus” feel as real and impactful as live-action movies. Don’t miss out on “Lazarus”; new episodes drop every week. Just like previous works by creator Mamoru Oshii, “Lazarus” is anticipated to run for only one season, consisting of a total of 13 episodes.
