Fox’s “King of the Hill” wasn’t just a successful sitcom.

The cartoon program offered an uncommon perspective on Texas, typically underrepresented in mainstream media. The Mike Judge production captured the essence of Texan culture and didn’t shy away from playfully mocking it. Moreover, the show acknowledged and valued the Lone Star State without relying on offensive stereotypes.

That compassionate angle made the show’s jokes land even harder.

Fox ended “King of the Hill” after 13 seasons in 2010, but it was inevitable that this tale would be resurrected. That’s where Hulu comes in, offering us a sneak peek at the revival of this beloved series along with some tantalizing insights.

The new season features 10 episodes and finds the Hill clan in a very different state of mind.

The fourteenth season comeback finds us catching up with the Hill family several years later, with Hank and Peggy having retired and readjusting to their hometown of Arlen following years spent working abroad in Saudi Arabia; meanwhile, Bobby is now 21 years old, thriving in his adult life as a chef in Dallas.

In a return for the revival, original creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels take the helm once more, with Judge resuming his role as the voice of Hank Hill. Veteran television producer Saladin Patterson, known for his work on “Bernie Mac,” steps in to guide the team as the new showrunner.

One sad change?

In November of 2023, Johnny Hardwick, known for voicing the conspiracy-minded character Dale Gribble during the initial series run, passed away. A recent promotional video features his character and hints that Dale might have run for Mayor, as it has been some time since the show’s last episodes were aired.

In the Hulu credits, Hardwick’s name is listed, but it’s uncertain whether he provided fresh voiceovers for the remake prior to his passing. According to People magazine’s tribute to the voice actor, there might be recordings he made specifically for the reboot.

“King of the Hill” returns Aug. 4 on Hulu.
