In early concept sketches by artist Constantine Sekeris, Marvel Comics’ powerful hero Sentry was almost depicted with glowing gold fists. The final costume design by John Staub, a highlight of the MCU, is a remarkable representation of the character. Interestingly, this design came very close to mirroring the villainous Void in terms of visual contrast, as it would have made Sentry even more radiant against the dark backdrop of Void’s menace. However, the version that made it to the film had a slight difference, which may not have made Sentry as distinctively bright and powerful an opposite to the dangerous Void as the original concept art suggested.
Sentry Nearly Had Glowing Gold Fists
On his latest Instagram upload, artist Constantine Sekeris shared a preliminary sketch of Marvel’s upcoming, formidable superhero. While there are minor discrepancies compared to the on-screen version, one alteration is notably distinct.
The early conceptual artwork featured a character named Sentry with glowing fists, an impressive representation of the mighty comic character. Comparing this preliminary sketch to the eventual design that was approved, it’s clear there were significant alterations made to the final costume as depicted in Thunderbolts*.
Across different versions, Sentry’s gauntlets, trousers, and cape show only minor color variations. The main difference lies in the upper body part of his costume, which is sleeker and features fewer dark lines in the latest design. In this final version, the Sentry emblem on his chest has a more compact ‘S’ shape too.
The completed costume concept more closely resembles contemporary depictions of Comic Sentry, except for the decision to use a gold-toned instead of yellow-tinted design. Illuminated fists would have underscored the heroic nature of Sentry in contrast to his darker counterpart, The Void, represented by a black silhouette of Lewis Pullman’s shape.
Instead of having a dark aura enveloping New York around him, Sentry radiates an expanding shadow that seems to grow from his person. To maintain the contrast between his benevolent persona and his menacing alter ego, it would be incongruous for literal light to emanate from his hands at this point in the story. Since this is Sentry’s debut, Bob has yet to master his powers entirely, and we haven’t witnessed all of his abilities just yet. Therefore, there remains a chance that he may exhibit a luminescent quality in later appearances.
